USA roadtrip #23: Hole-in-the-Rock-Road with amazing slot canyons [EN|GER]

From all of our stops, the Hole-in-the-Rock Road surprised us the most. And this in a very positive way.
Spooky_14.jpg

The Hole-in-the-Rock Road (HitRR) is an approximately 60-mile long (one-way) dirt road near Escalante. From this road there are several branches that lead to different slot canyons or rock formations.

Here you find a table with some stops.

MeileZiel
8,4Escalante, Covered Wagon Natural Bridge, Cedar Wash Arch
12,7Devils Garden Wilderness Study Area
26.6Dry Fork Canyon, Peek-A-Boo-Gulch, Spooky Gulch
31,5Coyote Gulch
33,4Chimney Rock
37,1Sunset Arch, Stevens Arch, Coyote Gulch
48,9Fiftymile Bench, Hole-in-the-Rock-Arch

Before you visit a destination be well prepared about how to get there, because there are just a few tourists in this area and the trails and canyons are not really signposted. Adventure as we like it ;)
Spooky_5.jpg

During excursions on the HitRR you should keep the weather in mind. Reason one is that the roads are so dry that the earth can absorb only a little rainwater so the road immediately becomes muddy and impassable. Reason two is that the Slotcanyons are a great danger in case of downpours and will be under water in no time.
Spooky_8.jpg

Because the weather during our stay was not optimal, we decided to visit the three adjacent canyons Dry Fork Canyon, Peek-a-Boo-Canyon and Spooky Canyon first.

Spooky_7.jpgEntrance of the Peek-a-Boo Canyon

Spooky_6.jpgEntrance of the Spooky Canyon

We would also advise you to walk through the canyons in this order as they become tighter, darker and more adventurous in that order as well.
Spooky_13.jpgYes you have to go through there

Spooky_12.jpg

Already the Dry Fork Canyon has inspired us but which was clearly outclassed by the other two. To this day, we are still amazed about what exciting canyons we explored there and how little we have read in advance about them.
Spooky_2.jpg

Spooky_10.jpg

Half the day in these canyons, we have just met about three other groups of tourists. If we think back to the commercial tour 3 years earlier in the famous Antelope Canyon, exploring the HitRR has been much more impressive and was more fun to us.
Spooky_11.jpg

We would have really liked to explore more sights on the HitRR, but an approaching storm thwarted our plans.

And now from dirt to light: Viva las Vegas!

MileDestination
8,4Escalante, Covered Wagon Natural Bridge, Cedar Wash Arch
12,7Devils Garden Wilderness Study Area
26.6Dry Fork Canyon, Peek-A-Boo-Gulch, Spooky Gulch
31,5Coyote Gulch
33,4Chimney Rock
37,1Sunset Arch, Stevens Arch, Coyote Gulch
48,9Fiftymile Bench, Hole-in-the-Rock-Arch

Spooky_12.jpg

What a amazing place! Love your thinking way to avoid huge tourist path! :D Do you think it's praticable with a sportive dog? (find you thanks to @freedomshift who take this post in is pay it ou post)

Yes we are always looking for places without many tourists.
The biggest canyon (Dry Fork Canyon) can be done with a dog. But the Spooky Canyon is really narrow and sometimes you have to clime up small rocks. So I guess it also depends on how big your dog is and if you can lift him up if it is necessary ;)

Thanks for your answer dude, i'll remember ! :D I guess I could lift him if I had haha

@freedomshift featured you in the pifc curation contest
very nice photos

Thanks for letting me know :)

Hello @roadtrips, I found your post through @freedomshift post on pay it forward contest for this week. What did you find in that hole? Another hole to sneak at 🤔.. Awesome photos anyway, enjoy your trip 👋

Thanks for letting me know how you found this article.
Yes, that was the good thing about the canyons, that it seemed that they have no end :D

Is it hard to find water resources in the middle of the rocks? Seems like you really enjoy exploring the holes out there

Yes it really was great fun to explore these canyons. There aren't any possibilities to find water, so you have to make sure you carry enough with you. You should also keep enough water in your car before entering a dirt road

Whoa.. I watched Nat geo wild before, I thought it just because of coming at the wrong season. Thanks for your information and advise too. Looking forward for more amazing trips and photos 👍
