The refrain in this villanelle echoes that familiar wish for ones life to be different, for the path to be that bit more interesting, and for fewer obstacles.
There's a long and dusty road ahead
with thorns and bushels by the side.

Rofiqi’s shadowy metaphor is multi-layered and complex. After reading it many times, my urge is to visit Indonesia in order to appreciate the colourful folklore which informs this poem. When we turn off the light and look deeply enough, we can learn to know the self which lies in our minds’ shadows.
