Structuring non-profits in tandem with cryptocurrency is a clever play.
It's a way for people to open source creatively collaborate.
Instead of trying to play within the traditional corporate business structures for profit - it is perhaps way more 'profitable' for the community as a whole to structure the base of support to be "non for profit"...In this way it's about managing and building the organization indefinitely...and ideally into perpetuity.
Stellar is an example of a cryptocurrency project taking on this innovative approach.
Equal Life Foundation is an example of a non for profit company that I've been a supporter of...and it will be cool to see how cryptocurrency plugs into this organization in the future. Who knows - maybe I'll get involved more with the foundation.
AION is a 3rd generation blockchain cryptocurrency project using the "non profit" model.

It's a way to practically crowd source grass roots movements. By structuring a self-funding mechanism based on the effectiveness of their being community support - The funding mechanism supports the community to support the community - Creating a win/win dynamic of team work for best benefit.
If the crypto/non-profit has sufficient interest - the thing could exist...grow, expand, mature - indefinitely into perpetuity. (From a basic survival perspective - This is an incredible possibility)

Strong Legal Compliance and Practices. Self-Regulation is common practice to go above and beyond in order to be transparent in terms of various legal compliances...audits. Solid Book Keeping.
Decentralization meets Centralization in a way that leverages the power of Decentralized Organization. The Non profit acts as a hub for a global networking community...ideally over time establishing bases around the world that are protected from nation government tax theft. Reducing/Eliminating any tax burden puts the best growth potential into the community.
Investing in People / Life. It's for Life Greatness...that's the whole point.
I think choice causes humans an awful lot of stress I don't even think many have taken the time to breathe....to take a breath to slow down and actually process....articulate the extent of the strain and stress here within having so much choice. There's kind of an unsettling experience within being in a constant state of flux. Settlement is ironically the "secret".

- What I like about this social experiment, is the fact that it's success is directly dependent on ordinary people everywhere - where there's a willingness to say,

This is really a wonderful idea, I never really thought a non profit organization could work well with crypto currency but reading through the points stated out by you, it's a GO. It's a good thing that you support them and I hope others follow suit
Global reach, grassroot connections and a decentralized framework............ essentially these things cover most of the bases. My oldest cousin has been working in an NGO for last several years. In fact he started one of his own 3-4 years ago and he told me all the nitty-gritty of funding one. It is actually quite challenging to move the money around. I mean gathering is one thing but to move around the liquid is the most challenging for certain organizations. I think crypto can be the way to go for him.
