GekeVenn: HARLEY-DAVIDSON

in #corporatism6 years ago

President Trump recently warned Harley-Davidson that it would take a "hit" for moving some of its production overseas. But their move was the unintended consequence of Trump attempting to "protect" US jobs by enacting tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. Again, this isn't capitalism. There are no government protections under free-market capitalism. This is government intervention creating a seemingly never-ending series of economic problems.

The EU has threatened retaliatory tariffs against the US, which Harley-Davidson cites as reasons for moving some of their production overseas. Meanwhile, Trump is courting foreign motor cycle companies, trying to lure them to the US as a form of punishment for Harley-Davidson... a shining example of why government should never be involved in any private industry.

Note that Harley-Davidson Vice President Paul Jones is also currently an industry representative on the U.S. Industry Trade Advisory Committee on Consumer Goods (ITAC 4), which is a joint appointment made by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative.

I think it is sad that so many companies feel like they "have to play the game." Harley-Davidson of all companies shouldn't have needed to go down this path. :(

the return from lobbying makes it the best investment.

This has been coming for a while and will keep coming for Harley Davidson. They are set on their target market and haven't really invested in anything new for millennials. They are just expecting that Harley Davison will be forever cool and people will just keep coming in to buy motorcycles, but they keep targeting boomers all the way with no expectation of having to adapt to anything but baby boomers... And that's a constantly and gradually shrinking market.

They just keep doing the same thing expecting the same results they have always had.

Looks like they're taking us for a ride!

To be fair Donald Trump did suggest totally getting rid of all tariffs and having free trade but that was a total nonstarter for our trading partners. It only really makes sense to hire former government employees as lobbyists.
