I've Had It!

That's it! I've had it with this stupid username.

If you read my post How My Very First SteemIt Move Was So Wrong & Will Affect My Entire SteemIt Career you know how I got stuck with this impossible username.

The big problem is that SteemIt usernames are stored on the Blockchain and can't be changed. As a result, if I want another username, I'll have to create a completely new account en transfer all my earnings, while giving up the reputation score I worked so hard for (at one point it was all the way down to 11).
I still have to figure out the whole process, but I'm going to do it... for sure.

Up until yesterday, I was still doubting whether to go on using this username or not. It's an impossible, hard-to-remember and easy-to-misspell username, but it seemed like such a hassle to go through all the trouble of migrating everything to a new account.

The Tipping Point

3 days ago, I decided to make a new introduction post, this time with a picture that could be used for verification. I don't really like putting pictures of myself online, but hey, a girl's gotta do what a girl's gtta do, right?

So I decided I wanted a pattern we have on the wall in our living room as a background. I ended climbing up my desk, moving everything around,... believe me it was kind of a hassle (especially since I have severe back problems).

It was only when I was uploading the picture that I realized...

I had misspelled my own username!!! :-(

So up the desk I went again... sigh.
Fortunately, the second picture turned out to be a lot better :-)

But that was the point where I realized I should just make the change. This username wasn't going to do it for me.

Choosing Is Difficult

But now I have to decide which username I do want.
To be noticed and remembered on social media, you need a good username, preferably one that is catchy, niche-related and easy-to-remember.

I've been thinking about it for 3 days, and I simply can't decide...

  • I originally signed up for SteemIt to blog about cryptocurrencies, but quickly realized I'm no match for all the crypto-pros on this platform. So the name BitcoinVideosPro - which is the name of my website - does not cover the load, since I blog about many different topics.

  • Then I liked the idea of maybe having a SteemIt related username. I like Steemwise because it can be interpreted in so many different ways ánd it reminds me of Pennywise, the clown from Stephen King's 'IT', which is one of my favorite books. But then again... the fact that I'm writing this post proves that I may be a lot, but definitely not 'wise'...

  • Which brought me back to simplymike, which is a nickname I once came up with to make 2 different points: I'm not a very simple person, but what you see is what you get. No B.S.
This username seems to have it all: it's short, catchy, easy to remember,...

I was about to go for it, when I realized I could also go for the plain, boring but not unknown name Mike.Janssens. I have been using this name for over 10 years when I was still in internet marketing. And although at first glance it looks like there aren't many people from that niche present here on SteemIt, I assume there are more than I think. The fact that there aren't many marketing-related posts, doesn't mean the marketeers are not there....

I know @jerrybanfield has been in internet marketing once. Today I looked up and found @kurttasche. They may not know who I am, because back then they were the big fish, and I was more like a medium-sized fish.

But that does mean there were plenty of little fish that did know my name.

On top of that, it's the name that's on my Facebook profile...
So it might not sound very good, nor is it very catchy or original (in my country this is a very common name, something like 'John Smith' in the UK), but it might bring in more followers than all the other ones...

You're so nice for commenting on this post. For that, I gave you a vote!

thanks also for the reward :)

Honestly, I'm not sure if you're trying to get away from the name Mike. Maybe internet marketing was a sexist area and you felt you had to hide behind a man's name? Steemit isn't like this, nor modern social media. If anything girls are embraced, often more than men. So feel free to even use your real first name. But if you don't want to use that,
I vote Steemwise!

Thanks.
Going for the name of Mike is a long story with too many details. LOL
To put a long story short: I have my reasons for not using my real name. But you're right, maybe I should go for a female alias...

How about Mikey, it's really short and is not easy to misspell

Good idea. It sounds like how a native English speaker pronounces my name...
Unfortunately, it is already taken... :-(

I vote for the username: Simplymike
It's simple, catchy and easy to remember

Put Mike.Janssens in "About" field or anything that will relate you to previous account. Steemwise sounds cool but it's too broad and generic imho.

Steemwise is very catchy. The first related thought when I read that was Samwise from LOTR, the humble friend, companion, and advisor to the ringbearer. You seem to give advice from a more humbled perspective, even though you have sound ideas. I was thinking more along the catchy lines of crytoqueen or steemqueen. I think you might want a flexible username, so if you get tired of the crypto topic, you can keep the name and continue to focus on new things. Steemgreen? MikeSteem? Springsteem?

Thanks for the compliment blush
I'm indeed looking for something that is flexible. I haven't made up my mind yet, but I've seen some good suggestions here :-)

Will all that you've went through with this username "itsjustmike" comes to mind first.

I still haven't decided, but it is one of the top options :-)

I saw the name in the reactions but Nowyoulikemike sounds great to me. And Justmike also. You could even think of Mikesworld, Mikesthoughts, or something like that.

I like 'Nowyoulikemike'... it's funny :-)

That were exactly my thoughts .. it's funny! You really make me think about my own name, but I stick with the name. Hetty is my first name, and Rowan is the name of my white shepherd dog that means the world to me ... so yes, I stick with that name.

Mikeslemonade or mikeylemonade. It sounds cool to me, but what do I know? I'm a dork lol.

I vote for the username: Mike.Janssens
It may bring in more followers because it is not completely unknown
