How I Steem (Guidance for users who are struggling)
I’ve been here for over 6 months already and after many ups and downs, I think I’ve finally found a nice rhythm. I got stuck throughout late summer and early fall, but I’ve made some huge growth this past month. 900 followers, now 1300. 700 sp, now 1050. 56 rep, now 59. I must be doing something right, right? Most importantly, I feel much better about my experience here and the possibilities we have in front of us.
So I want to share the way I Steem in hopes that it can help some new users to not only find their own success, but contribute to making the whole ecosystem fairer, more fun, more awesome.
Experiment
I’m always experimenting with how I interact with the community. I spent a long time feeling down about how no one was reading my fiction since it’s what I came here for. I would still like for people to read my, but I realized that while the steemit platform has its limitations, there are tons of other fun and meaningful ways to share and interact. Find a way.
When my fiction went ignored, I started a series called Optimism at the End of the World which I describe as “political self help”. It aimed to help the reader differentiate between their own consciously created self and the self created by socialization, in order to take full responsibility for thoughts, emotions and even beliefs. Through this, one can begin to redefine their past and create their present and their future. The series was well received...usually...it won me a bunch of OCD nominations but it tired me out, some posts were sill overlooked, and I realized I was putting a lot more time and energy into it than I could afford.
I tried experimenting with language learning, tried to start a Spanish study group and failed, in part because it wasn’t what I was most passionate. I tried fiction again and failed to gain readers. I changed my focus to community building which aims to be non-hierarchical through Be Awesome discord, a community based on forming sincere connection, finding ways to benefit ALL so there is no need for selfishness OR selflessness, no ass-kissing or scheming for monetary gain and The Deadpost Initiative which aims to reward and find readers for undervalued posts. This initiative has still gone relatively unnoticed by most large accounts but I believe it belongs on the trending page every week and I’m quite sure it will get there soon enough. Big thanks to @sndbox for keeping it afloat these past 2 weeks.
I’ve since moved on to writing more blog-like posts, posts about Japan, crypto, behavior on steemit, and more casual posts about life, community, society and “spirituality”. Whatever else steemit is, it’s primarily a social media platform, stuff gets forgotten and buried under newer stuff, not everything gets the attention it deserves. Always insist on quality but don’t stress yourself out.
Live for yourself so you can live for others
I don’t believe in work. There are things that allow us to survive and live more comfortably but these should be fun. “Work” is not fulfilling when we can’t see how it’s benefitting anyone directly and in no way resembles what we’d be doing if we had true freedom. So I make sure most of what I do at steemit is fun and beneficial for me so that I have energy and resources to help others. I loved making Optimism posts but they felt like work and I was putting too much pressure on myself to make them very professional and lengthy. So I kept the content but got much more casual with it, to make it easier on myself so I can post more, connect more, earn more, give more.
I used to worry about posting too much or posting too little, about covering too much variety or not enough variety. I’ve given up caring. Some of my posts are for you. Some are for me. Some are to inspire, some are to mess around, some are high quality, some are kind of stupid, I don’t worry about it anymore. My only requirement is that the posts are either fun for me or productive for the community, preferably both, but one or the other is good enough.
Paying it “Back”
This is a kind of preemptive Paying it back... I do not like that we basically need the support of more established users to do well at steemit, but at least the environment here is better than Facebook, there are more possibilities and we can improve our situations by doing well here. Also, there are lots of decent established users who support new users and have meaningful things to say and while they are spread thin, they will try to help you out if they notice the meaningful contribution you are making. They do what they can do. Some, like @stellabelle or @kafkanarchy84 or @reggaemuffin or @ats-David have taken the time to read my posts and give me a boost despite tons of users who are looking for their attention. Others have given substantial rewards for leaving quality comments like @exyle , @firepower @danaedwards or @cryptoctopus. Only a few dolphins and whales are more self-congratulatory than helpful but the good and bad alike are busy. Make sure your attention only goes to the good ones, I’ve just shared a few.
Ideally we wouldn’t have to pay homage to the “gods” (don’t get too full of yourself whales, just a convenient metaphor) of steemit, but the system is imperfect and many of them are also trying their best to pay it forward. I check the “hot” page a bit to spot them and know them, but not as much as I check my feed or my favorite minnow, but a few minutes every day. I hope they understand when I give them 11% upvotes as I’d like to save my voting power for users who are still struggling to have their contributions fairly rewarded. I hope they do the same and pay it forward rather than giving much of their voting power to large accounts.
Paying it “Forward”
I try to make sure 60-80% of my upvotes and time reading and commenting goes to users whose accounts are smaller than mine. This is the only way the platform will become more fair and the power more evenly distributed, and also many who have great things to contribute. Some new users find their voice and passion for steemit right away like @dedicatedguy @mariannewest or @spiritualmax (whose progress at the platform is mind glowingly fast). Others (the rest of us)need time to find themselves, and maybe you can help them with your support.
I try to balance between old friends and new users who could potentially be new friends, with preference towards users who are putting a lot into their posts and content. I don’t bother with the new page. I try to find these users through comments on my posts, on friends posts and through involvement in the Deadpost Initiative.
Always focus on what you can do better. There is crap to be found but don’t dwell on it. Focus on having fun and making friends. There are three roads to really succeed at steemit, one is investing lots of money or being at the right place at the right time, another is being a master bullshitter or playing the game well. DON’T FOCUS ON THOSE 2! The third way is just as effective if you are persistent. Find your voice. Be yourself. Be creative. Support community and what you believe in.
If we stick together and become stronger, things can only get better here.

I agree with the fact that we need the help of well established users on the platform. It is not really nice to realize that without their votes you will be stuck with more or less a dead post. But I like the fact that you write for the sake of writing. Even I do the same. Money is definitely an incentive, but writing for the sake of writing is higher art. I used to blog before, and I am blogging now. Maybe the focus has shifted a little, but I still blog. People who join the platform thinking they are entitled to free money will not last long.
I help new users out with full power upvotes usually as much as I can. (Usually all the ten votes I can give, including the comments if I find them interesting).
As always, keep steeming. Cheers!
Honestly, with the state of the world, I believe most of us are entitled to free money, but I don’t think it can work like that as there are still many who would just take advantage. I’m focused on shifting trust back toward people so money is not as much of an issue, but in order to do that, I need to help the money reach more people cause that’s where all the power and trust has been stored.
Why do you think that everyone is entitled to free money?
Maybe not “free money” but everyone is entitled to food, clothing, and shelter because Our Mother freely provides that for everybody. So no, everyone is not entitled to steak and eggs breakfast. But yes, everyone should be entitled to beans, rice, corn and fruit (or whatever grows abundantly were you are from).
Okay, but someone has to grow them. Someone needs to have the land to grow them. And that means someone needs to invest money, time and effort to grow and market them. So I do not still see how they could be free for everyone.
I believe nothing should be free in this world, but the fundamental things could be given as exchange for some sort of skill.
We are already growing enough food (in the United States) to feed us.
It’s our distribution system that is broken.
40% of our food is wasted and ends up in landfills.
Companies like Nestle are literally stealing water (from drought distressed California) for corporate profit. Perhaps that’s where the money can com from.
Stop corporate welfare - there’s more money and manpower.
Teach your military to pick crops for basic training - more “free” money.
Make schools have gardens and let them distribute the food to their students and families, have parents (who can now spend less time at work) volunteer in the garden - more “free” labor. The land is already paid for.
Gardeners are paid on a daily basis to tend to our grasses and shrubs - plant some tomatoes and basil instead - more “free” food - the land is already there.
It’s possible.
You make a great point about finding your voice. I have found after changing my focus to posting daily, the writing and my voice has began to get more polished and I can feel like I'm getting a better understanding of myself everyday.
I feel like it's important to forget about money while your here. Don't get me wrong it's great to see people being interested and getting votes from more established users is nice because it's letting you know that your voice matters, but it's a very limited belief and it can only become detrimental if you focus that value over the months of your progression.
Finding something you are passionate about is also very important and it's good to realize that being passionate about something means that you will hold a lot more interest when people swing by your content to discuss it. The post isn't important, it's the views and connections that generate from it.
I'm looking forward to hearing more about your Steemit journey in the future, and hopefully in a few months time I'll be standing in the shoes you are in with the ability to share my experience with the newer members, in an attempt to help them through the initial struggles.
Hope you are having a good day pal! Keep up the great work.
PS. Your Optimism at the End of the World series sounds awesome! Expect to see my views some of your comment feeds.
I think the biggest shift I’ve had here at steemit was caused by what you hinted at, to stop focusing on each post individually and focusing more on my entire experience at steemit. Some posts take a lot of work and get nice attention. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t post that kind of stuff but perhaps it’s time hasn’t come yet, which is how I see my fiction now. Perhaps fiction on steemit needs to come from someone with an established reputation, so I can build that reputation other ways doing other things that I enjoy. Anyone who focuses on the friendships and possibilities here does well eventually. That’s not to say everyone who does well focuses on these but forget all that, at least it has gotten better these past few months.
I just pretend steem is worth $1000.
Then when my post pays $.052, I Pat myself on the back (that’s a heck of a writers salary!)
Heyy bro! Thank you for mentioning me! Really appreciate your support!
And wish you the best.
I am planning on participate on your next dead post initiative btw!
No problem! You’ve shown your dedication on steemit already ;-)
These are all really good and go with my style of how I do life and how I do things, too. I started posting daily in December, and I've grown so much because I do just really have fun doing it. When I wake up in the morning I can't wait to do my post. It's one of the first things I do in my day. And I'm growing a nice little community of people who I like to read and who like to read me.Glad to be one of yours. :)
Yeah, I can’t wait to see what kind of comments I get on a post that I’ve worked hard on. Sometimes I get nothing but sometime someone shares something that make sure my day when I realize how many awesome ideas are in the minds of so many awesome people who I probably don’t even realize are awesome as they pass me on the street.
Ha ha yes! Right!
Me too! And I enjoy getting comments and replying to them. It feels a little like having coffee with my friends.
I also hop on here and read a post or two and leave a comment whenever I have some down time, like waiting in the car, or waiting for the water to boil or the dryer to stop.
I feel you, I have gone through similar circumstances of being ignored for a long time.
But the best thing anyone could do is to keep going on and keep improving himself.
Now I don't post to get money or more attention, I post either what I am feeling or to try out something new.
This way, if I don't make money, I can make progress and that's the only thing I need in my life.
I have this theory that you can get ultra rich and succeed at anything if you just don’t think about money and success too much and just focus on h5he activity that excites you and being the best version of yourself. I try to live that way.
That's very cool thinking.
I try to live by that too. I will do whatever I want to and find new ways to make money from it, but only after I have achieved something in that thing.
Thanks for recommending @dedicatedguy @mariannewest and @spiritualmax account, I took a peek on their pages and all of them looked interesting.
I am following them now and will be reading their content, it is quite hard here to find good content.
I am glad you liked my profile! :D
I will read a few posts too once I get the time.
Check out @axios too, forgot to mention him as another new user who is kicking ass
following him now. Thanks for the suggestion.
Well said man.
Other than checking the profile of people who comment on my post, I also like to check out the hot section to find quality content and posters (who don't make it to Trending).
Be yourself, because I'm loving your posts!
Cheers.
Trending is always the same people and they are usually too swamped to notice you, no one deserves that much attention really. Hot will change every few hours so there’s a wider variety of users to get familiar with. I try not to look at it too much though as I’d rather help posts get on hot than help posts already on hot. And thanks!
That's a good end-goal: to help posts reach Hot instead.
Right now though, I'm stuck between the both - neither do my posts reach Hot nor can I make others reach it. xD
I sometimes make hot in certain categories with $5-10 payouts. It doesn’t make THAT much of a difference really. Don’t worry, once you get a few loyal friends (I don’t want to call them followers) some will resteem your posts or put you on autovote and make it easier on you.
Aw man, you had to break my lopsided god-like admiration for the Hot section?
Hehe. Serious note, thanks for the encouragement man.
Yea, this pretty much sucks with everything. My husband streams on Twitch, and his stream is better than pretty much anyone out there. But everyone always goes to the top streams, and they just get bigger and bigger even though they're not the best.
This is one of these days when you manage to read my thoughts, arrange them and put them in a post that is well written and easy to understand.
I still can't say I have found my rhythm, although I have found consistency and the power to go on, as well as many openings for future projects and collaborations... I'm sure it's all going to work out
Similar thoughts have been going through my mind lately, like:
Besides all that, I mainly vote on people who are lower in ranking/ SP than me (some exceptions are spiritualmax and you), so in a way I'm already helping out others but I feel there is a way to do so in a more fulfilling way.
I also try - to use your words - "balance between old friends and new users who could potentially be new friends"
This comment starts to sound a little random but you mainly showed me once again that I'm on the right path and that it's sometimes necessary - story of my life - to take some sideroads as well as to sit down and take a breather and talk to other passerbys.
I'm glad you're talking to me/ us. It's these little talks that stop me from turning around and walking away.
You are doing awesome. If it feels like too much work, make it more casual, change it up, do whatever to make your experience more fun. For me it helps to not be a perfectionist because otherwise it’s too tragic to see posts buried under new ones.
I don’t exclusively vote on “smaller” accounts, I’m happy to upvote anyone who is undervalued which is a good many of us. I’d just like to help more people become dolphins.
Don’t walk away! Bend this place to fit you!
Your help with newbies is a winner & a selfless act of kindness, I have been here a month now & without people like you I would still be level 25 & scratching my head for answers. Steeeeem on brother.
Nothing I do is entirely selfless, nor is it entirely selfish. I aim to eliminate these two concepts from my behavior as I believe in many situations, everyone can benefit. We just need to build those situations. I’m glad to be appreciated though, I appreciate you too.
Well put @whatamidoing. You're certainly making some epic progress over there and I congradulate on where you've come thus far. Its awesome to see how much you've been experimenting and trying different things. Its not easy to let go of the things that you want (but maybe arent as valued by the platform.) Ive experienced this as well but have also found much fulfillment in trying new things and discovering the things that are valued here.
I took notes on the good dolphins and whales you mentioned. I'm also interested in supporting minnows and I spend a lot of time investing my energy there but knowing more individuals who could lend a hand is part of a balanced approach on here.
Awesome post!
Cheers,
~ @axios
The best approach is to pay attention to EVERYONE and not pay TOO much attention to the account size. I’m not sure how ultra capitalists among us feel about me giving 11-20% upvotes to whales and dolphins while giving 30-100% upvotes to minnows but I think it’s a fair approach.
I can’t believe i forgot to mention you as one of those who has quickly found their voice at steemit! You’ve blown me away in terms of speed of success and I won’t be surprised if you catch up to me in a few weeks like @spiritualmax has. I hope you do!
That makes sense. I think the dolphins/whales will understand ;-)
And thank you man! Really appreciate that. It's been a really great experience thus far :)
I liked your fiction XP Sorry it didn't get so much traction. Have you looked at that writer's block group?
That's some seriously organised steeming!
Is that the one hat requires you to read and upvote a certain amount of posts a day?
And thanks for the support! I will share more fiction...eventually!
I have no idea, I know it exists and that's about it XD
Yay!
