A Steemit Census
Most countries, that are interested in looking out for their citizens, take a Census every few years to get a snapshot of what the living and social conditions are at a point in time. A Census is not intended to be invasive but it does serve two basic purposes:
- It gives valuable information, to the powers that be, of what resources are needed and where. It provides valuable data to help plan for the future.
- It also provides a record for future generations of how their native land has evolved over time.
It would be impossible to do a regular Census on Steemit and many people may not want to be participate but I have an idea for Steemits first Census ...
The Power of the Crowd
In keeping with the marketing crowd-sourcing initiative and Blockchain projects like Augur, lets use the power of the crowd.
I am proposing a type of straw pol, to gather some data which will be useful to the community.
The Benefits
For Authors
Authors will be able to use it to help decide
- when to post
- what to write about
- get support from local authors via the @steem-community directory
For Marketing
@andrarchy and the marketing team will be able to use it
- to inform the decision about where (geographically) to focus resources
- over time will be able to publish additional stats on how active users on Steemit are growing
For businesses
Lots of users in a country would provide an incentive to start promoting your business here on Steemit, maybe even accept STEEM for payment.
Everyone can Participate
Remember it is in everyone’s interest to be included in the Census. Being included means making sure that you are taken account of in the decisions that will be made about Steemit in the future. If you are not included, you may not be taken into account. Where will the next Steemfest be held? Where will the marketing team take an interest in promoting?
If this census is repeated over time this will enable us to track developments on Steemit, I am hoping, with considerable accuracy.
This can only work with your participation, so please take a few seconds to post a comment. I will collect and collate all the data and post some high level stats in a few days.
Privacy
This initiative is not about invading privacy. Please don't post if you feel it will reveal any information about you or your friends that you do not wish to be revealed. And don't be too specific. We are looking for high level stats here, country level of maybe some detail on the big cities.

How to Participate
Feel free to share any additional info that you think would benefit the community, but for starters please post a comment with the following details.
How many of each of the following are in your area?
- Active Steemians
- Whales
- Active Celebrities
Example Comment
Ireland, Active Steemians 10-50, Whales 0, Active Celebs 0
Other Regions
New York, US East Coast, Panama, North India, Dubai, Australia, South Korea, ….
Ranges of Numbers to use
0, 0-10, 10-50, 50-100, 100+
America, Korea, Germany will all be 100+ but feel free to be more specific by Region for these obvious ones
Even if someone has posted already but you wish to submit an alternative assessment, please post a new comment and your response will also be taken into account.

Great initiative. This style of participatory census, along with the great global overview of web traffic by @gavvet combined with a Steem Community Directory + some @robrigo wizardry... ;) ...and we have the true beginnings of a great map, a Steem atlas!
The beauty of a public blockchain like Steem, and to me one of the most profound features, is being able to freely share information with each other. On Facebook and its ilk, as we all know... they have all the data, and the users are left in the dark. (Insert panopticon reference here)
On Steem, we have the capacity to be truly, voluntarily informed, and engaged with one another, and we're just beginning to coalesce the tools necessary to fully grasp such a state of being... in action. ;)

I updated my census entry. There is at least one whale in the Minneapolis area.
Probably about 10-15 total in Michigan too, from what I understand.

I expect that Dan's next project may be able to facilitate a true decentralized census, if it is still along the lines of his posts about basic income.
Do you want just one witness statement from each region? Also, it may be necessary to clarify some terms. What is a whale in this case, and what is an active user?
The more estimates from each place/ region the better. I will average the results.
I am being a bit vague about definitions because I don't want people to get too hung up on being wrong or right. This is a best effort basis. I will refine this post if we start getting a good feedback with some more standardised definitions.

Interesting one, re Germany i can say we are a lot Steemians, way over hundreds and at least one Top 100 Whale - happy to investigate further after my vacation so next week

I just looked through the Japanese posts and checked some people's followers, etc. I think up until know maybe there have been about 30 users in Japan but only about 15 of them are active. One user told me that the recent hardfork etc discouraged a few others from continuing. Maybe they'll come back soon. It's hard to say.
That is really useful.
I am not expecting too exact a figure from any individual but I think this is all very useful info to have out there. Even better if we get estimates from a few different users, I'll use some stats to combine the estimates and combined with the other sources that @lovejoy mentioned it will begin to build a map of Steemland :)
