Thursday is Butterfly Day and Insect Day Giveaway- Week 20

Hi everyone! Happy Butterfly Day and Insect Day Giveaway- Week 20! Gather around the Insect Pub to see butterflies and other insects, and to make new friends. Post your butterfly and insect photos, or art work for a chance to win Steem Basic Income Shares. A minimum of 2-SBI will be given away; 1-SBI for photos and 1-SBI for art work. If no art work is submitted, 2-SBI will be given away for photos. Depending on how many entries there are, I might be able to give away more. Here is mine for today of the Viceroy Butterfly.

The Viceroy butterfly (Limenitis archippus) looks similar to the Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus).

The differences are as follows:

1-Viceroys are usually smaller than Monarchs with a wingspan of approximately 3". Monarchs have a wingspan of approximately 4".
2-Viceroys have a black line across the hind wings. Monarchs do not have this black line. (The black line on this Viceroy is faint.)
3-The abdomens of Viceroys seem to be shorter than those of the Monarchs.
4-Viceroys flap their wings faster and erratic. Monarchs float and glide.

This is a photo of a Monarch so you can compare the differences. Not to confuse you any more, but the 2 black spots on the lower hind wings on this monarch means that it is a male. Female monarchs don't have these black spots in the same area.

According to sciencing.com, Monarch caterpillars feed on common milkweed that has "cardiac glycosides" which makes the monarchs taste bad. The Viceroy caterpillars feed on popular and willow trees that have "bitter salicylic acid" which makes the viceroys taste bad. So, the mimicry of both species help each other.

Adult Viceroy butterflies like to feed on aster, joe-pye weed, goldenrods and thistles. They will also feed on aphid honeydew, and dung.
