My entry to @whatisnew’s Butterfly Day and Insect Day Giveaway. Week 20.

Check the post Here for more info on the giveaway.

Some years there are many Painted Lady butterflies around the yard. I don’t know where they are this year. I have only seen a few landing on the flowers.

The Painted Lady is quite similar to the Monarch butterfly and is often mistaken for them. They both have white dots on their wings. The Painted Lady has black splashes on her wings.

This one landed on the gravel at the edge of the driveway.

Gorgeous photos! Thanks for clarifying - I definitely would have thought those were monarchs.

Thanks @owasco. It’s hard to tell the difference. 😊

The Painted Ladies sure are pretty and I love the last photo. I have only seen a couple this year also. In fact, the whole butterfly population of all species has been very low this year. Very disappointing and has left me wondering why. I couldn't agree with you more on your statement about butterflies. Thanks for using #butterflyday and #insectpub tags Jo! : )

Thanks @whatisnew. So much pesticides and insecticides used on lawns and crops, I worry about the loss of our butterflies and our honey bees.

Me too. Yes, pesticides ans insecticides, and today I was thinking about the weird weather we have had this past spring and this summer. It was a long, cold spring and the drastic changes in the weather, 20-30 degree difference in just hours. Very cool nights during the summer and and not enough rain. All of these combined makes it difficult for nature to grow and survive.

I love butterflies @redheadpei, they bring so much colour, joy and delight to our lives.

Hi Angie. 😊 Butterflies are a treasure to see flitting around the lawn.

Gorgeous butterfly images @redheadpei especially as they spread their wings so obligingly for you. Good luck with the competition. 🦋

Hi Trudee! While you are having winter in Oz, we are in a heat wave the last few days. Thanks and for the good wishes, 😊 💕

Yes!! And I didn't know the difference between her and the Monarch. I agree with you though! This year, the butterflies, in general, are few and far between from their normal numbers.

You capture so real beauties and now I am going to have to pay attention to the ones around here to put them in the right category! Thanks so much! The pictures are delightful!

Thanks so much Denise for your lovely comment and the tip. Appreciated! It is a worry when the butterflies are so scarce. Some need milkweed to lay their eggs in. The farmers have cut a lot of that away.

🎁 Hi @redheadpei! You have received 0.1 STEEM tip from @dswigle!

Thanks Stephen!

Beautiful photos... funny that you mentioned that they are often mistaken for Monarch butterflies... as that was the first thing that I thought! Best of luck in the contest!

Thanks @bengy and for the good luck wishes. It is easy to mistake them. 😊

Wow that one is really bright, i'm glad it posed for the photo long enough for such a great shot.
