Butterfly Day - Butterfly House and Bug ZoosteemCreated with Sketch.

in #butterflyday5 years ago (edited)

I stopped by the GT Butterfly House and Bug Zoo in Williamsburg Michigan last week on the way back from a mini vacation. It was a pleasant surprise much more than I expected. Happy #butterflyday by @whatisnew Also checkout this video of a few butterflies at the feeding table https://d.tube/v/sketch.and.jam/QmYrqzA7dM5jMm2cfVkDgdrcbrQAW2BdDewPyaWgMKPPEx

First up we have this newly hatched banded peacock butterfly. The butterfly caretaker brought this newly hatched butterfly out for me to photograph.

Here's another shot of this papilo crino.

Here's the hatchery, they had numerous different pupas hanging up with their latin names next to each batch. Once they emerge the workers set them free in a mini greenhouse full of flowers and different sweet things to feed on.

Here's a couple Blue Morphos aka morpho peleides feeding on a banana. These guys were really hard to photograph as they were constantly flying and rarely sit still at any given moment.

This orange oakleaf butterfly aka Kallima inachus landed on my leg. They seem to land on things that match their colors.

Here he is opening his wings.

Here's a gray butterfly that landed on my girlfriends leg. I'm not sure of the name of this one.

Here's a violet clipper aka parthenos sylvia. These are native to Malaysia.

Here's another one with slightly different colors.

Here's a brown clipper with the same latin name.

I'm not sure of the name of this one but I think @foxkoit shot a similar looking one the other day.

Here's a common mormon aka popilio polytes. He lost one of his tails. The butterfly expert said that most the butterflies they raise only last about a week on average. Just long enough to find a mate and reproduce.

In addition to the butterfly house they also had a bug zoo with characters like this stag beetle that they brought out and let us pet.

They had other animals there as well like this albino salamander. Happy #butterflyday

OMG! I am so jealous!!! A butterfly house and a bug zoo?!?! That is my kind of place! I am so happy that you stopped there and shared all of these great photos. The banded peacock has got to be me favorite. What a gorgeous butterfly. And the orange oakleaf doesn't look the same when its wings are open. Look at that amazing shot of the stag beetle! All of the photos are amazing and you made my day. Thanks so much and Happy #butterflyday to you too @sketch.and.jam! : )

It was a lucky find for us on the way back from our camping vacation. The oak leaf was my favorite i have video of it eating i'll try and upload it to dtube.

All so very beautiful Butterflies !!!!. Absolutely fantastic photos...!!!!!
🦋😊

I could've spent all day in that place. The butterflies liked to land on you if you stood still.

The butterflies were pretty tame perfect for closeups.

Wow, fantastic shots of so many and so colourful butterflies.

There was a luna moth in there somewhere but i couldn't find it. I only caught about a third of the varieties they had on my camera.
