Characteristics of the 'king of the jungle
Below, we will describe some characteristics of the so-called 'king of the jungle'; it will allow us to know him better and get closer to the answer: The lion - 'king of the jungle' - whose scientific name is panthera leo, measures approximately two meters long and its weight ranges between 150 and 250 kilograms. It has a strong and strong body, with a short, smooth ochre-brown coat.

Its muzzle is wide, has small eyes, its extremities are thick and strong, and its head and neck is lavish with an exuberant and attractive mane. The lion is called the 'king of the jungle' because of its imposing, majestic carriage, and because of its strong roar that generates fear, as well as its regal mane.

This impressive animal has a great ability to dominate the herd and is also the largest predator in the food chain. Male lions are large in size and in adulthood reach 250 kilos in weight.

Currently does not inhabit tropical forests, as it prefers African savannas for being open places. The lion is sociable by nature, and is that it lives in groups of young and females with some link, which are cared for by a male or two.

Arrival to the herd
When a new male arrives in a herd, there is usually a fight with the dominant male, after which the loser must leave the herd or die from injuries received during the confrontation. The victorious lion stays with the lionesses, and there will also be occasions in which it kills the offspring to generate its own offspring.

Lions, for different social reasons, change groups or herds. Some lions are nomads, living alone, or simply form a new group along with other males.

Within the herd, it is the females who usually engage in hunting; however, the lion also hunts, although its main role is to protect the herd. It usually acts in the hunt, and knocks down large prey, for which it uses its power and strength.

On opportunities where the lion hunts, it can reach speeds of about 56 km/h, except that it cannot be held for long.

For this reason, it tries to sneak up on its prey, at least 30 metres away, before rushing to knock it down. Once the prey has been caught, it nails its deadly tusks, which are up to eight centimetres long, into its throat.

Feeding the 'king of the jungle
The diet of lions comes essentially from large mammals such as zebras, buffaloes, rhinoceroses, young elephants, gazelles, giraffes, horses and wildebeests. When they eat, fights are likely to break out among the herd.

However, the dominant male is always the one who eats first, followed by the adult females, the young and, finally, the puppies.

The lion is known as the 'king of the jungle' because of its roar, as no other feline enjoys such power. This impressive roar can be heard at a distance of nine kilometres.

The title 'king of the jungle' is probably the result of his imposing presence, but also of his social behaviour and customs.
