Daily Dose of Sultnpapper 07/02/18> Playing trash man … not a job I enjoy but we all need to do it.

in #blog6 years ago (edited)

It seemed to me that the month of June just dragged on forever this year and I really don’t know why I feel like that but it did as far as I am concerned. It probably is a good thing June only has 30 days in it because I don’t know that I could have stood another day or two of it.

I think one of the reasons it seems that way is each time I opened my computer to write the Daily Dose or respond to some comments that folks were nice enough to share, the price of steem would be less than the last time I closed my computer. It didn’t really even matter if I only closed the computer for a few hours, it would always be lower when I got back on it.

Just flipping the calendar from June to July has seemed to make a difference at least for the first day anyway as steem took a nice price hike early in the day and I actually saw some green numbers on the internal market here on steemit.com. I haven’t look at the results for June but I would be willing to wager that there wasn’t a day that steem actually gained in value, am I wrong?

One thing I have never made a habit of doing is flagging people here on steemit.com but I had an account drop in on my daily dose from 07/01/18 and left a comment that at a glance was not what I would consider a blatant spamming type comment, it read “Nice read. I leave an upvote for this article thumbsup”. , @tomask-de .

Had this response come from an account I was familiar with or who had commented on some of my stuff before I wouldn’t have given a second thought about it, but I didn’t recognize this account so I decided to take a little visit over to where @tomask-de parks his sorry ass and have a look at the comments he has been making.

I started scrolling down through the comments this account made in the last few days and I stopped counting when I reached 100 comments, all the exact copy of the comment left on my Daily Dose. It sure is good to know that I am in the company of 99 others that he deemed were making posts that were “nice reads” makes feel real good that so many people are producing quality stuff as he sees it. NOT.

I am so inexperienced at flagging comments I actually flagged myself when I tried to flag him.

That just pissed me off even more than I already was, so I determined what I needed was more practice. I went and found a person who up voted @tomask-de comment and while it was only $0.01 worth of a vote I went ahead and flagged his sorry as there and wiped his meager $0.01 off that he had coming. It isn’t the matter of the penny; it is a matter of principle as I see it.

This place is our community and just like the community I live in I will pick up trash I see and put it in the trash can, even if it isn’t my own trash. We all need to do a part to keep the trash under control here and I can’t think of a better time than when the price of steem is low and so is my voting power. So while it may seem like I wasted a few votes that could have gone to deserving folks please just look at it as paying the trash man to pick up the trash.

We can all make a difference but we each need to make an effort in keeping this place cleaned up. I will continue to clean up the trash I see and I hope you will as well.

Until next time,

Yes, I flag those sorry excuses for Steemians everytime they grace my posts. It just burns my biscuits when I see these guys hanging around taking up space in my comments. Another useless piece is @haikubot. Annoying creature!

I've only seen that @haikubot once on any of my posts , I guess I am blessed to write the way I do which isn't anything that is even remotely close to what it looks for.
Trash pickup is Mondays and Thursdays in our area but I will be cleaning the trash up anytime I see it hit anywhere near where I am on here. Burned biscuits , haven't heard that one in a while, I had an aunt that used that phrase a lot, even though I can't recall her ever making biscuits and gravy.

I do make biscuits and gravy. So for me, the statement is appropriate! I take out the trash when I see it too. It is the only way to stop the nonsense...

I share your disdain for these spammy comments. There are some users who you can tell struggle a bit with English and I don't penalize them for making an attempt but when you go to someone's comments and they're all exactly the same it's a clear effort to just make money with little to no effort. I flagged that user a few times for good measure. It's time to clean this place up. : )

I gave him 15 hours to remove the comment, and let him know the error of his ways but got no response so I tried to be fair. I agree on people who struggle with the English and actually applaud them for trying, I even have used translation services in order to communicate with some when I have needed too. It is easy to tell those folks from the spammer types though, because they don't use the same line 100 times in a row. Thanks for popping him as well, maybe he will get the message sooner or later.
We all need to do our part, even if it is just picking up some trash and throwing it away.
Thanks again and have a good 4th of July.

This user could be a bot. The platform is being overrun by them. People open a multitude of accounts and then have them repeat the same comments. Thank you my friend! I hope you and yours have a great 4th as well!

I don't even bother flagging I sometimes just Hide the comment and move on. Everyone seems excited about the upturn of steem this month. NEvertheless I plan to let my rewards pile up this time. Who knows we might just hit that jackpot this month.

haha

I have the feeling that it will bounce around up and down as far as the value of steem, but it was nice to see it rise for once in a long while. I never have extracted anything from here and am not planning on it, in fact I have given plenty of steem and sbd away since I have been here.
If it turns out to be a jackpot I might just have to reconsider though on taking just a little out to see how the process works.

Ugggghhh. I flagged myself the first time too!

I now flag routinely. Under the 'be the change you want to see' theory. I could say 'piss on 'em, they look better wet' but that would be nasty so I won't.

One bad thing about traveling is that my time here is not normal, so I often miss posts from people I genuinely like. Includes you. I'm not ignoring or uncaring, just doing other stuff.

As always, thanks. And thanks for the SteemEngine business. That was a nice lead there,

I fully understand and I know how it can be when travelling. Thanks for checking in and travel safely.

This made me chuckle, especially the bit where you accidentally flagged yourself. I'd probably do the same, as I've never flagged anone before. I usually just reply "Thanks" without upvoting. But you make a good point, so maybe I'll flag these identikit spam comments in future - or maybe I'll hide them, as @klynic suggests.
I'm not sure how profitable @tomask-de's strategy is. He only has a rep of 17.
Actually I quite like haikubot. It makes me laugh - though not to the extent of wanting to give it an upvote. I must have a weird sense of humour.

Well @tomask-de REP was at 29 when he made the comment on my post but I have been alerting others and others from reading this post have gone and flagged him down 12 points in REP thus far, so it was working for him for a little bit but it isn't any longer. I didn't realize there is a way to hide comments other than by flagging them, maybe someone could explain to me how that is done. I only know to flag them to hide them.

Good point! I'm not sure either. Maybe flagging is the best way. Good work getting him down to 17 :)

I didn't do it by myself, I had help from others and that help is very much appreciated. We need to clean up messes when we see them and when we all pitch in it becomes much easier to do that.
