It is high time to upgrade from the old family of NiceHash Miner ^{a referral link} desktop software to the newest app with brand new look.

Look at this difference in UX. The latest version of NiceHash Miner is 2.0.0.9:

The miner download is available at the NiceHash site ^{not a referral link}. You are no longer redirected to GitHub repository as you were before.

Setup

On Windows the version 2 app gets installed into the C:\Program Files\NiceHash Miner 2 directory.

Binaries for miners and config files are stored into C:\Users\your_user\AppData\Roaming\nhm2.

I guess that this approach is in line with current Windows application development and deploy trends.

With version 1 you simply decided where to unpack the distribution file and run the miner from.

First Run

After the setup you have to enter your bitcoin wallet address to which you want your mined bitcoins delivered.

Then you do a quick benchmark test. Benchmarks and mining optimization:

At this step the miner kept restarting excavator.exe without really doing anything. It looked like the benchmark stage was caught in a cycle of test - start excavator - test - restart- ... The thing was stuck.

Solution

I realized that the benchmark is hanging while doing the DaggerHashimoto test. I excluded this script and the miner started working. Great!

Mining

After the benchmark tests are done - and a quick fix explained above applied - the miner is ready to start mining.

Since I entered the same bitcoin address I was using with version 1 miner the app started adding mined satoshis to my balance at this address:

Checking Miner Settings

There are far less options that you are able to set up through UI:

You can still manually edit the configuration file. I think that they intentionally slimmed down the settings page and left the essential options only. As long as it is working I am fine with this.

Nice new touch is a *Mining details+ screen where you can see how various scripts are performing:

The Conclusion

Version 2 looks better and brings latest miner script executables to your desktop. The problem with benchmarking could be a showstopper. This probably doesn't happen on all machines and is hardware dependent.

You can use both old and new version. In fact you can use them at the same time. That would be an interesting exercise in hardware stress testing :)
