Tarot cards Minor Arcane handpainted cardssteemCreated with Sketch.

in #art7 years ago

This is the love-child post of my Handpainted Tarotcards and my sketch posts.

While trying (without any luck) to find the last 4 Major arcana cards for my tarot-card posts I stumpled upon some old sketches. It turned out that I was further in the process of designing my Minor arcana than I remembered. I am still looking through the stacks of paper, so more may surface still. Until then, I give you my initial sketches for the pages of all 4 suits

As well as the sketches for the swords and wands:

as you can see they are very simple, it was basically just an attempt at trying to decide on the placement of the objects and persons.
The same goes for the wands:

Part of the process, for me, was to try out different versions and placements and I usually made whole sheets, and then chose a few of them to work further on.
Second version would look something like this:

From this point I could sometimes transfer the design directly unto the finished cards, such as the ace of wands and the 10 of wands (the one with the phoenix). some would need more work. I am still hoping to find more and maybe - just maybe, I might take up the task again and see if I can finish the Minor arcana too. It would be a nice project, but it would also be very time consuming since I would have to research the meanings and symbols all over again, for a further 14X4 cards.

I saw most of your Tarot Series, good work. The style is very close to the original Waite Tarot, but you gave each card a new twist. For example, the Empress being pregnant, the Snake being the focus in the Lovers, etc. You did not just re-paint the originals, you gave some extra symbolism perhaps according to how you feel and understand each card.

As you mentioned RPG in your previous posts, I'd like to give you my personal opinion: there is an old game set in a unique setting, NEPHILIM. It blends the occult (mostly the Western type of Ritual Magic) with the modern setting, in an excellent way. The original game is French by Multisim, but there is an english version by Chaosium (the publishers of Call of Cthulhu RPG). Playing Nephilim (as a Keeper) was the reason I delved more into the occult symbolism.

Thank you, and thanks for the tip. I will definitely check it out.

Looks like that would take so much time, so many different designs and ideas to work through!

yeah. I am currently, and constantly looking into ways to get more time for my creative projects. Unfortunately with very little success. maybe when I get old and can retire I will take it up again :-)

Awesome art work @evilhippie sir, you have a great talent i appreciate your work.
