Big Cabin

The American studio Renée del Gaudio Architecture has built a house on a remote site with spectacular views. It consists of two buildings clad in cedar and topped with gabled roofs.
Big Cabin | Little Cabin strives to embody the character and feel of a traditional cabin, all in a purely modern setting. Perched on a rocky cliff, both structures offer panoramic views of the Colorado Mountains, Collegiate Peaks and South Platte River. A thick pine forest surrounds the property to the north, giving the dwelling a sense of intimacy and protection. The two cabins frame the panoramic view and create a protected wind area between the two.

The cabin gable roof form and rustic materials are reminiscent of early vernacular buildings in the area. The exterior cedar cladding is dark to blend the house with the surrounding forest. Large expanses of glass connect the occupants to the natural landscape. A simple, open plan allows daylight and breezes to naturally filter through all sides of the house. High efficiency electrical appliances and LED lighting minimize energy consumption.
