A monument to St. George./ Памятник святому Георгию #architecturalphotography

I have already shown a corner in the Berlin Nikolaiviertel district, where a monument to St. George is erected. Now I want to tell a little more about this monument. The monument is very noticeable both in size, expressive composition, and impressive rendition. Therefore, all groups with excursions in this area necessarily come to this monument. But we were already in the afternoon, the square was deserted and no one prevented us from viewing and photographing the monument. /

St. George is one of the most revered Christian saints. The most famous of his feats is the battle with the serpent. According to legend, the snake, who lived in the lake, terrorized the city. The ruler of the city persuaded the inhabitants to appease the snake - to sacrifice young men and women, promising that his daughter would not escape this fate when the turn comes to her. And he was going to keep his word. The crying princess was met by the warrior and he asked about what was happening. After listening to the maiden, the warrior promised to fight the destroyer. It was George. He entered the battle with the serpent, and, summoning the God to help, struck the monster./

It is this moment that is usually depicted on all the numerous monuments to St. George and the icons. Usually George strikes a snake with a spear. But on the Berlin monument he has a sword. In the other hand he holds a standard with a cross.
In the final of the story, the grateful inhabitants of the city accept Christianity and glorify the God./

German sculptor August Kiss сreated this remarkable monument in 1853. Initially, the sculpture stood in the inner courtyard of the City Palace. But, when the ruined Nikolaifiertel district was rebuilt after the Second World War, the monument was moved to the embankment of the Spree. There he now stands since 1987./

This sculpture is very interesting to consider. Very carefully worked out all the details. The dragon near seems very convincing with this scales, thorns, teeth. And the emotions of the frightened horse, which George directs directly to the dragon, are transferred very well./

The beer bar nearby, of course, took advantage of this neighborhood. The name speaks for itself./

St. George is a saint-protector of two lovely small towns here in Croatia - Lovran & Pag & also celebrated by the Roma people (Gypsies).

In Croatian we call him Sv. Juraj & the celebration day is called Jurjevo but just only in few places in Croatia it's celebrated today. A huge bonfires characterize the celebration but this tradition is almost lost.

In Serbia they call him Св. Георгије or Св. Ђорђе, in Bulgaria Св. Георги but I don't know the traditions there...

The Gypsies are celebrating it this way:

Recently, as I was picking wild asparagus I saw a snake eating a bird which inspired me to write a song. It's in Croatian & some dialects mixed: https://www.facebook.com/notes/care-ass-art-photography/sv-juraj-zmaj-zmija-i-ljubav/2083766191650758/ - Maybe you'll understand something! ;)

Wow! Thank you very much for such an interesting story!
The dance is similar to the Russian round dance (horovod).
The snake brought you to interesting associations in your song.

Horovod = oro (mac.,bul.) = kolo (cro., ser.) - traditional Slavic dance 😉

Clearly. Uniting dance. :)

This is awesome, @eto-ka! I love how you combined the various photos with the story behind the statue. I especially like the closeup of the angry dragon and frightened horse - you're absolutely right, those emotions are wonderfully conveyed by the sculpture. Thanks so much for tagging me so I wouldn't miss it!

I like this monument and I enjoyed preparing this post. Thank you for pushing me to this.
