American White Pelican

325 to go!
These pelicans fly south in the winter to the southern-most United States, Mexico, and Central America. They Migrate and breed in central United States and Canada and are particular about breeding sites. (Changes in climate are altering many species migratory patterns and territories.)
In Utah there is one well nested site on the Great Salt Lake, but they travel many miles from there to reach good fishing sites. The Great Salt Lake is too salty to host more than brine shimp, brine flies, and the species that feed on these. The pelicans will eat as much as they can and return to their nests to feed their young.
Pelicans are community birds and are known to work together to chase fish to shallow areas for easy feasting.
What are those funny things on their beaks?
During mating season these grow on both male and female pelicans who are of breeding age. They are ornamental symbols that will shed once the mating season is over.
An amazing fact I learned today is that they can flutter their bill pouch to cool down in the summer heat.

Wow, the quality of these images is amazing! It's hard to believe they were taken through binoculars.
Thank you so much. It means a great deal. It's harder than having a better camera I'm sure, my usable percentage is pretty low. But if I'm patient with myself I get these I can share that make me really proud of my work.
Congratulations, Your Post Has Been Added To The Steemit Worldmap!
