Mallard Female & Babies - Anas platyrhynchos

These lovely little ones are waiting for a sign from mom that they will set out on an adventure. Resting quietly on the side of the pond, I gave them some space when photographing. When mom sits down they blend in better than you might think and are ready to move at any moment.
Mallard females take care of the young without the help of their father. They all leave the nest soon after hatching to go find food. Mallards eat a variety of things, which makes it easier for them to adapt to a variety of environments. You will often see them with their tail feathers up, gathering water plants and whatever else they may find beneath the surface. They do not dive completely underwater to forage but gather what they can reach from dabbling.
