The War on Sleep is Neurologically Stripping You of Your Humanity + Mental Health Consequences of The Future

in #science6 years ago

Prevention is better than cure. But it's not really easy to measure by any standard. Cures are easy. You had some trouble and now you don't. In case you get a different trouble by fixing the previous one, great! That's a new problem that has been fixed. People (either out of ignorance or malice) have been trying to "fix" the economy for a century. The privately owned FED (no seriously, it's a private. But FED says it isn't because of "Public Interest" and not being operated for profit) which was created to babysit economy ended up creating the largest economic crisis of USSA (which ended p being saved by WWII) and economy hasn't been fixed to the day I'm writing this post.

It's The Same Thing With Health

When it comes to majority of the individuals, being "healthy" is the natural state of being. Being sick is screwing it up. In east there is a system called आयुर्वेद (Āyurveda) which roughly means the knowledge of life and longevity. The name mentions nothing about medicine. But for thousands of years, it was "a" medicine equivalent among many other forms of treating patients. Ancient Ayurveda texts taught surgical techniques, including rhinoplasty, kidney stone extractions, sutures, and the extraction of foreign objects and there have been surgical equipment dated over 1000 years.

One thing I've repeatedly seen is the emphasis on not getting ill in the first place. After all the name means knowledge of life and longevity and not knowledge of treating illnesses. Reading about Āyurveda reminds me about Cybersecurity. Not screwing things up has given the utmost importance. Nobody in cybersecurity is interested in saying "Our clients faced a bunch of hacks; but we totally controlled the damage". They would rather say that "Not a single breach happened under our watch".

Before the medical industrial complex, the accomplishment of the doctors of the region was making sure that he/she doesn't have much of a job to do. But things have come a long way.

Prevention By Sleep

While I was stuck a school we were constantly given "lectures" by many teachers about burning the midnight oil to pass the exams well and earn a good life. I never cared for those things because 1) I was smart 2) I fully knew that almost everybody performs worse with lack of sleep. I always had a very good nap before exams.

I've also lived a fairly healthy life. I've never had any major illnesses and the first thing I do when I get a flu is sleeping 10 hours (maybe more) for the next few days. By the 3rd day I'm 100% well again vast majority of the time. Awareness of one's body is enough to convince that sleep is good for you. But I didn't know it was this beneficial:

The War Against Sleep

It's mostly done with the intention of enhanced productivity. Then again, the road to hell is paved with the intention of creating a Utopia. The FED's actions had the intention of making the economy better. But all these are laser focused on the immediate and blind to the rest.

If you want a future, you need to think much further than tomorrow or the next week. It took me months earning practically nothing to get to the place where I am on STEEM. I could have spammed or just made a huge lot of low quality content ad could have been fine for the short term. The spammers were earning few times what I was earning a the beginning.

Forcing someone to stay awake is going to make that person loose a very important aspect of life; Peace & Tranquility. Try to remember a time where you had a terrible day and fell on the bed and slept like as a dead person. How did it feel after getting up?

The Tragedy of Bruteforcing

There could come a point of your life where you feel like you have to keep up with the rest. You could end up feeling like you just have to study some part of a book. Sometimes things can be inevitable like having to return a project on a set date. But many of these event are avoidable. I've skipped entire sections betting on my ability to make it work with what I've studied and I've gotten "A"s. I've intentionally returned poorly done projects because I'm a self-proclaimed lazy person. I'm living my life one lifetime at a time. Those who only lived for the next few years damaged their health. It wasn't much because most of my "friends" are barely in their 20s.

But learning about these health facts I've come to realize that most of my peers are going to be a part of very lucrative business opportunity.

If people started handling their cars as if they were SUVs and never serviced the cars, the repair stations are going to have hell of a good time. When people are handling their bodies in an irresponsible way without giving it the proper rest it deserve, the bio-chemical machine is going to break apart. This doesn't mean that the Bruteforcing would stop. It would actually spiral into something even larger in the same way financial regulations have made a mess.

Health related companies are going to have a great time in the future all the while making health issues even worse. The signs are already there. The following T-Shirt received some serious backlash and controversy because of implications regarding mental health:

Your Bedtime is Nature's Customized Hospital For You. Do Not Compromise It

You won't be able to measure much of your results. Your friends would ask "what's the point". But remember that sometimes not having anything is the greatest blessing you can have. So don't wreck your biological service station just to go to some hospital that treat symptoms without even knowing the disease.

Sleep is a very mysterious concept to me. I often wonder if it may be one of mankind's most overlooked assets. I know that for me the best ideas come in the foggy place between being awake and asleep.
I have read in more than one self help book about the benefits of napping.

I struggle with that a lot. It appears my natural rhythm produces one good post per month. That means at least three B-grade post in between. The pressure is there to do one a day. I would rather not bury that one decent post though.
I believe sleep is the same way. Following ones individual biorhythms seems to lead to better long term results.

Sleep certainly is one of the most powerful assets. I tend to think a lot all the time. So I'm not too familiar about that "foggy place" but I've had some amazing rock solid ideas and spiritual revaluations after a good deep sleep and waking up with a very clear mind without distractions.

Gave you an Upvote + Resteem on a post of yours. you'll get better with time and produce more quality posts under less time. I know that I've I'm proved over an year.

Best of Luck!

Thank you so much! I truly appreciate that. And yeah watch out for those distractions they get me everytime.

early bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.

Scientifically speaking: Yes

You make a great point that sleep is much more important than most people realize.

Most have at some point felt the effects after staying up for a day or two without sleep, and the mental fogginess and delirium that results.

Long term, the effects only compound while the body never gets a chance to fully regenerate and restore itself.

Thanks for the post!

And sleep plays a major role in that repair and restoration process.

I really need to take note of this. I should take better care of myself. Somehow I'm still healthy at 36 despite what I have put my body through. Knock on wood lol. Well done @vimukthi and resteemed! :)

It's never too late for good habits.

It is too late for me, I've unfortunately fallen into the enhanced productivity trap. Only good news is that am still 26, hopefully I'll escape

What builds up over time can be corrected over time. If you are just 26 I doubt there would be any irreversible effects. Good healthy habits will fix you up over time. The only real loss would be the opportunity cost.
