Madras, Oregon awaiting the solar eclipse
August 2017. Waiting for the solar eclipse. We camped the night before. This was the sunset. Crazy. Like the apocalypse was coming. Thought of this since we missed out on the blood moon. The solar eclipse was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. It was other worldly. I remember the morning of the eclipse. There was this guy walking around the campground beating a drum. Maybe he knew what was coming. How special it would be.

Madras was one of the best places to view the eclipse from. How dark did it get?
It got dark like twilight. No sun but not pitch black. The stars came out. At Madras we got 2 minutes of totality. It was like a black sun in the sky. Seemed like you were on a different planet looking up at a totally different sky. Totality was mostly spent looking at the sun through eclipse glasses but it lasted long enough to look away from the sun, take off the glasses and look around - take it all in.
