We needed wood-chips, so we asked for them. My neighbor has been clearing some property to build something on and I started to see little piles of woodchips being dumped in his yard... So one day I asked what he intended to do with them because we needed woodchips for a couple projects. He said serve yourself, so I did.

But that wasn't much of a pile and we needed quite a lot more. I ended up asking two different people who own Tree Service companies I saw driving by and about two weeks later, we had a large pile of woodchips dropped off where we wanted it!

What you can do, which I have seen also works, is make a sign that says WOODCHIPS NEEDED or WANTED with easy directions as to where to drop them off.

Some friends have also had them delivered by calling local tree service companies.

Look what's coming up out of the pile:

I believe they are Coprinopsis atramentaria or common inky caps... they say it's edible but can be poisonous when combined with alcohol!!! Here the wiki on it. The photo doesn't look very much like it but when I did an image search and read more into it, I'm pretty sure it's what it is. Some say the fungi kills seedlings from their gardens... especially strawbale gardens!

If they're edible, I see how this problem could be the solution!

Looking GOOD! Mushrooms are great for all kinds of stuff, mulch, fertalizer, cleaning up various spills...

A little helper I use, often "Inaturalist" you take a phot and it goes through their database then gives you several options to compare to. Make certain they aren't related to some sort of deathcap mushroom...

Free stuff is great, as long as it's chemical free. i DO worry about commercial woodchips - they treat the wood with so much crap. Chemicals leeching into the soil subvert and limit our natural compost processes and we end up ingesting those chemicals. Buying a mulching machine is a great option if you have enough electricity so you can regularly shred found branches and natural tree fall, and have your own supply. Hey, you could BE that neighbour for others! :)

@ecoTrain

Oh I hadn't thought of that at all... fortunately, I know these guys have been clearing a specific parcel of land that shouldn't have been treated with anything. Well I hope!

Thanks for making me think about it more

This is a major issue in urban areas. Lots of trees get sprayed. Pesticide-laden woodchips doesn't make for great growing.

yeah totally makes sense.

You've been visited by @nateonsteemit from Homesteaders Co-op.

Wood chips and mushrooms! I'm developing a fascination with Foxfire mushrooms lately, and I'll be using log piles to grow some on. It'll be fun to sit out and see glowing mushrooms in my food forest.

fox fire... I never heard of those... not yet. You say they glow?

I have to look into that, thanks

Yeah man, there's a couple types of them that glow. In general they're all called Foxfire. Spores and Mycelium plugs can he bought on Amazon. Soon on HSCO if I can get my act together ;)
