Monolithic Vs Modular - A Change In Perspective (An Original Thought)

I had a discussion with a close friend of mine the other day, and they were talking about a collaboration project with some peers (A musical work) and the lack of progress from the other people was causing some distress, so I tried to explain the following.

Using a monolithic approach to achievement (all of them being the cumulative total of another) means to me that if you never reach the end goal or get stuck halfway due to another failing (which imo you should always have moving goalposts, goals that unlock further ones), you will never actually feel a sense of accomplishment no matter what you strive for and ultimately achieve.

A modular approach to success means you can break down each action into a smaller module, so in this case, as long as they had achieved the portion of the project that they were assigned and had done it to the best of their ability, that is a win, you should feel proud about this, even if the project isn't completed yet you STILL achieved what you set out to do.

All it takes is that shift in perspective from monolithic to modular.

Interested to hear what you think dearest readers.

Much love to all, may you all achieve! <3

I've done a fair bit of PM over the years and it's SOP to follow the modular approach. Its more important the bigger the project becomes.
The trick is getting everyone to do there parts on time in order.
Good post dude.

Effective. Thanks for your input Percy. <3

I agree, the breaking down a project into smaller bites is the only way to do it. I attended College as a late learner in life at 38. I had to work full-time and juggle being a single mom. I started my online writing and somehow manage to fit some in here and there. I set some goals and I saw some fruition. Your method definitely works.

Thank you for sharing, I took this methodology from code writing and broke it apart to apply to goal setting and how I perceived achievement(s), it's been helpful to me and I hope helpful to others <3

You are welcome, and I'm happy to share good information with my followers. How interesting how you obtained it. It amazes me how where we have been can become such a light post for those following us. It's great that you're being a leader.

I just want to share the journey and the lessons I have picked up along the way with you all, so you avoid the mistakes I have, there is no leading and following, we march hand in hand into a shining future <3

I am amazed by the world we live in as well. Glorious things ahead.

Yes, hand-in-hand is a good way to walk.. sharing your knowledge is a rich gift.

This is exactly how all projects should work, especially something that is heavily involved. Any project that I work on always has achievement Milestones that come with a specific target completion date. It keeps you on track, keeps the momentum flowing, and on top of that forces you to sit down and actually look at what steps need to be taken to accomplish whatever end goal you are working towards.

Insightful, thank you for sharing. <3

Break your goals down into chunks. Over time, the tiny gains are huge! Good post.

Thank you, I do try! <3

I've had many projects and ideas in the past fall apart because people over commit and under deliver. This is part of what has kept me working for myself, because I can always count on me to get things done. If you want something done right, DIY. I don't think it's impossible to find true partners, it's just incredibly hard and poor management of timelines and deadlines can hinder progress. There's the psychological feeling of success, but then there's the tangible outcome, the deliverable itself, that if not completed... disappears. Which to me would feel like a failure.

Thank you for sharing, I think that in order to achieve the great wins we do need to work together, emergence, work towards the singularity. <3

Totally! There are projects I could never complete on my own, if for no other reason than lack of skills. Can't be good at all the things, and that's okay! That said, if you're not paying someone it can be hard to project manage their contributions. I suppose it's about finding partners as motivated and driven as you are/I am.

+100000 absolutely right, or you have to find what motivates the other just as much as you are motivated. <3 can be quite the challenge.

I am a big fan of shifts upon a paradigmic level, so I really appreciated this article.

However, just so as to give this a practical dimension - and to remain true to the original context, how might this apply to a music project?

Would different persons work on different tracks?

I think that early development of leitmotifs could help to encourage cross-effort compattibility.

Compositions are created in threads as far as I am aware, vocal track, bassline, drums, etc.

All mixed together at the mixing-table.

The issue was that particular individual had done all the vocals but the band was lagging behind and causing distress because they had a deadline / eta to fulfill and if they didn't get there, no recording.

So I wanted to try to give them a different perspective on achievement so they would not be dissapointed, which lead to this thought, and my sharing of it. <3

Ah OK...

Well there is another way to sort this out.

Blitzkrieg. Band-Jam. Pedal-to-the-metal.

Ideally done early so as to avoid Crunch-Time.

Music generation is sadly still quite out of my reach. But one day I will learn some fundamentals (digitally). ^_^

Thanks for the elaboration and explanation.

Unfortunately that method doesn't seem work well with people with special needs. Lessons are learned slowly (not trying to be offensive) or not at all. <3

I've spent 30 years failing to do what I've always wanted to do. No worries. I can relate. And I'm still gunning for it. ;c)

I'll be testing the early jam method in the coming month or two. I'll share my findings when I have them. ^_^

I'm excited to hear about the results <3, Never give up, Never Surrender.

Keep on Steemin and Sharing! <3

Exactly.

When you start focus on the process rather than the goal, things tend to go much easier. For whatever reason, telling ourselves "I'm going to work out for 30 minutes today" accomplishable and easier to digest than telling ourselves "I'm going to lose 20 pounds". Ultimately, if that is your goal, one will correlate with the other, but changing the way you perceive it, the way you approach it, makes all the difference.

Great write up friend, love how short and concise they are : )

Absolutely, agreed with this for sure! thanks for sharing. <3

Breaking down a big project into small achievable goals gets it done.

Hey new friend :) I'm happy to have crossed your path today! I really love this outlook- too many times others are feeling disgruntled about things out of their control. I remember feeling this exact way when I was in university ("Why am I putting in all of my time and effort while they aren't contributing..." etc.) It wasn't until a social psychology lecture where he discussed the importance of separation from yourself and others and this idea of reward for your part, that I was able to understand this and no longer have it affect me. Thank you for sharing, I'm looking forward to discussing more with you in the future :)

SMILE!
XO,
heart-to-heart
