Looking Back/Look Forward #ccc 2.24/ Market Friday by @dswigle

in #ccc5 years ago (edited)

It's time to think of things something to look back that I won't forget my whole life through. We have no today and tomorrow if we didn't pass our yesterday. Perhaps our life will just end up today and there will be no tomorrow, but yesterday is always there. We may live our life for only today but we also need a room in our heart and mind for tomorrow.

I made this post for two intentions, intended for @wakeupkitty and @dswigle.

To begin with, it is about the place I won't forget. As we remember, we are barred from going outside on shopping without our employers most especially when I was so fresh in my employment here in Saudi Arabia. I was then a young woman at 28 and my employer was afraid for my safety. Later on, I gained their trust and I need to go to a certain place by covering myself. My body will be covered with a piece of cloth that looked like a gown, a black dress called abaya. And I must cover my face and has a hole for my eyes only. In this way, I am already safe from intruders outside.

For you to know, when you don't respect their traditional way and dress code here, you will be bullied and men will disrespect you. I can't show even the tip of my hair. So it must be covered and we can do all what we want outside safely.

The first time I went outside doing this was like a horrible day of my life. I was not comfortable at all going to the market like this.

This is the way how I dress up going to the market or somewhere outside my employer's house.

Though I was wearing this, there was a time I was walking then someone holds my butt quickly riding a motorcycle. I got mad and reported to the police nearby. I described that bastard man and apprehended on the other road they passed by. That was my very bad experienced while going to buy something in the market. Today, nobody dares to touch me or talk to me anymore.

Those are things I looked back when I was new and now it's time for my latest life going to the market.
This is the nearest 20 minutes walk grocery store from my employer's house. It looks so small as we see the entrance but it has a big area inside. Everything we need, we have it here.

Before it was just a little grocery store but it improving to a big one.

They have basic vegetables needed a kitchen every day. So we do not need to drive for an hour buying in the wet market.

If we need something to fix at home, they also have it and even school supplies unlike before.

Name a cake or biscuits you want, we can choose it here.

Yogurt and juices tempting me to buy one of any kind. But my money budget is limited.

Do you love fresh milk, here is it. I don't like it, it will make me more chubby.

Just keep on capturing what inside the grocery.

Roaming around and round getting some stuff.

I need soda drinks and for my toilet cleansing materials.

My best appetizers made from the Philippines.

Everything I took a picture for my steemit compilation and post for the @dswigle Friday market initiative.

Along the way, I passed all this place.

A restaurant where only men can dine inside.

Car wash and car shop along the high way. I keep on taking photographs around.

This is a tailor shop.

The road was under repair.

The bookstore near our house.

Reflections on the glass wall, we can see the hotel and a clinic on the other side.

If we need medicine, there is a near pharmacy which we can see below the hotel rooms.

The corner from our house going to the grocery who is under repair.

Done going buying some stuff while just walking alone on the street. And here I arrive safely at home. This is the home of my employer and considered as my home too.

Thank you for walking with me from my Friday market until my way back home.

Something to look forward, one day I will be making my Friday market on the other side of the horizon. I wanna explore many things in my life and share it with my best friend @wakeupkitty.

Before I end up my post today, I would like to extend my gratitude to @dswigle for sending me tokens in my wallet last week through @tipu. So much appreciated and thank you for making steemit a better place with generous people around.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

The world is full of different cultures and traditions that need to be respected since they define the nerve system of many modern societies. We have seen several deadly wars over the last few decades simply because some countries have tried to impose a way of life to many countries, which lead to a bath of blood. hence the importance to deal with the question of religions and tradition delicately and with as much care as possible.

Just to clarify things a bit, covering in Islam is a religious thing, not a tradition. Same as with Christianism and Judaism. But not covering your head don't give people the right to bully you according to the Islamic laws since men don't have the right to touch women, that's just people being bad because not everyone respects Islamic teachings in where you are living.

When people go abroad, it can be somewhat hard to assimilate to the culture at first, but in the end, it all about what you want to do in your life of course.

Thank you again for the wonderful post,

Wow, you have a good clarification to add to my post. I appreciated on what you said it's my choice in coming here so I must do what is necessary. Thank you for dropping here. Additional good people I know in this platform.

Which is actually a very amazing post, telling of lifestyle that most of us have no idea what it's about. I have to agree that you are a truly Brave woman, agreeing to live this way for a year, especially since that is not anything like what you are used to. While I find it very interesting to be in a culture that is foreign to mine I cannot tell you for sure that it would be agreeable with me to do such a thing. You see, I don't like all the clothes covering my body and it has nothing to do with how it looks but how it feels to me. I think my body is claustrophobic LOL

It really does not matter how we feel about another's culture but it is important to respect others cultures even if they do not agree with our thoughts. I am sure someday when the I want exchange, it will go back to where it once was. Thank you so much for sharing and making this a part of Market Friday!

#MarketFriday loves you!

Thank you so much @dswigle. It happened when I was new here back year 1999, but now, I gain all respect from the people inside and outside. They never touch me anymore. Now I can speak Arabic fluently and adopted the culture and tradition. Do you know that when I am on my vacation to my country Philippines, my God I feel shy wearing short pants or dresses? They got mad at me when we had a beach party then I am still wearing a long dress.

wow, @olivia08 the real ninja!
keep on...

Wajajaja, ayaw saba dha.

You really look like a ninja... what I don´t understand with your dress in black... don´t you feel hot in it...SA has around 45-50 °C so I am wondering how women cope with the heat.

It's good so the hot temperature will not burned skin, my dear.

I wonder that too. Men walk around naked and women have to wear this because men cannot behave. It needs courage to live such a life. It is clearly not meant for women.

Yes, my dear when there is a male staring at me, I will lower my eyesight, I don't want to see his eyes to eye contact. Even my male employer and family members, I may talk to them without looking directly at their eyes.

@olivia08 I wonder how that is in your country. So many different customs. If you speak here to someone without looking them into the face they consider you as a untrusty and sneaky person.

I am fine with not shaking hands or worse being kissed instead of a handshake. I do not like to be touched by strangers.❤️

I find it sad that because men can NOT behave you have to cover yourself. It is disrespectful behavior these men have and how they are raised. My son would not dare to touch a strange person or pinch in a butt. Would never siss at them or whistle etc. If he would ever try he knows I would beat him up. These men are badly raised and those mothers should be ashamed about raising such children.
Those fathers allow their sons the same bad behavior.

This is not freedom but you are forced to hide the best years of your life and protect yourself in something uncomfortable.

You made a good post out of this and I hope you will be home very soon. When is your year over?

I find your life a hard one and admire you for trying to see the good in everything. You sacrificed a lot. You are a brave woman. Love and a big hug for you.

You have entry #11.

@wakeupkitty, thank you for your kind words and challenge to me. You are not the only one saying this. Don't worry my dear, I am safe and there is a reason why I stay. My employer's family are good for me. There will a goodbye time but today I still need to stay. And I hope God will give me a chance to be with my family at the right time while I am still breathing. I won't forget your words today and I will keep it at the bottom of my heart. I am so happy to have a person like you, a virtual friend who does this mean to me. You care for me as if we know each other for a long time. Steemit.io may vanish away but a person like you will be cherished forever. Before you, I have @mermaidvampire, a certain Filipina who keeps me going, @otom, @zephalexia, and @mers. They are Filipinos but we never know each other in person, but like you, they give me some precious guidance and advice.
STEEM ON MY DEAR! Tears are falling right now but happy and delighted with your words.

@olivia08 I really hope you have a good reason to stay and most of all you are safe.
You are dear to me, no matter where you are or live I hope we stay friends. We can without Steemit too.
I am happy I met you and admire all your hard work, the energy you invest in it.

I thought you would stop after a year. I hope they will not dump you if you are too old to work and travel back. You have many things to deal with.

I could not live like you, sacrifice myself like you do. I would have left my children behind for a job if there was someone I could trust but I do not like to be nominated and harassment by men or women. My whole life hiding to feel safe would be too much for me. I did so for over 24 years, curtains closed etc. Be blessed my friend ❤️

You are so welcome and thank you again. And thank you for your good thought you share. It will be something to look forward and let us see in the near future.

@olivia08 Let's focus on that. Happy day my friend. ❤️

Hey @team-ccc, here is a little bit of BEER from @olivia08 for you. Enjoy it!

Those carrots are enormous!!!!! What a fantastic #marketfriday post! Really love this initiative @dswigle.

I have a teary eye reading with the comment of @wakeupkitty. I smile reading the comment of @dswigle. So much fun with @otom and @mers ninja and reading your comment about the carrots, it forced me to scroll back to see how it looks, I laugh so much my dear. Anyway, thank you for dropping by.

HUUUUUUGE right?! LOL Glad it gave you a giggle ;)

You did well Olivia to wear that outfit where only your eyes are showing. I can see wearing it if you are travelling in the desert but not on an average day for shopping.

It sounds like a dangerous place if you don’t follow the rules and the men need to show more respect for women.

When did all this happen that a woman must cover up from head to toe? I know it started in 1979 in Iran after the Islam revolt.

@redheadpie, I happened a long time ago but now as long as I respect myself, I gained their respect to me. Not all Filipina is doing and following the dress code here. I show my face but I feel shy when someone looking face. All women are covering so if I am the only one without cover, they stared me badly. So I feel better if I did it too. Thank you for your good words my dear.

Take care @olivia08 and stay safe. 💗

Thank you and I will.
