Just Over the Rainbow Trout
With the terrible weather since my last trip I have fallen once again ill with the dreaded cabin fever. Clouding my mind all of this time was the thought of waters I have not yet explored. From what I've heard this is a great place to catch trout, so I knew once it warmed up I would have to see for myself.
My wait was over once I found out what the weather this week had to offer, two days in a row of 60 degrees F. This is oddly warm for February, but ill take it. I got ready by packing up my SouthBend ultralight for my spinners and my Plusinno collapsible for hook&worm.
I bring my spinners because I always seem to have luck catching trout with them. I also bring the worms just in case they want something real. Worms specifically because its been damp and I know worms are coming up and would be something they may be already feeding on.
I made my way up river and at the first sign of life I started fishing. I also set up my camera gear as I was planning on filming. This was shaping up to be a great day, and it was. I moved quickly from spot to spot, this way I get to see more of the river, I will learn more this way even though many fish were likely being passed up.
I made it to the end of the river catching a couple of rainbow trout. Each giving me a unique fight, rainbows are the most acrobatic trout, I think. Running left right up down and out, just a constant threat of the lure being spit. How exciting it was, 3 rainbow trout each over 12 inches.
I was just getting done releasing my last trout and moving to the next of the few spots left when a hiker had snagged my attention. "Nice trout, whatcha catch that on?" he asked. I Showed him my lure and said "spinners". The hiker then went on to ask about the camera on my head and gladly I told him I was filming myself.
Realizing I might be filming him I took the camera off my head to find quite the surprise. . . My camera was on indeed, but, not filming. I wanted to curse the 7 seas, although I had to bite my tongue as I was in a conversation with someone. That conversation happen to be dodo me saying "yup, yup, I'm filmin maself", err for pretend.
After parting ways with the hiker I came to terms with the loss. I have a few still shots I began to rationalize, and with that I slapped the camera back on and the trout became camera shy. With only 50 more feet of promising water I fished to the end only to find a small largemouth and an end to this trip.
All thats left is this gif, a few still shots and the tale of what only I saw. I gained from this trip optimism for these new waters this spring to come. On my end great fishing seems to be just over the rainbow trout.
Thank you for reading.

Those are some really nice rainbows. I have fly fished my entire life in southern coastal rivers for bluegill, panfish, and bass. I moved up near Atlanta about 10 years ago and have just not made the time to try "real" fly fishing in the mountain streams.
My wife and I went and hiked DeSoto Falls in the N. Georgia mountains and I finally caught my very first two rainbow trout on my fly rod. I finally feel officail!!! lol Thanks for posting.
btw, I wish I had all the fish on film when I thought I was filming!
Thank you!!! I would love to take up fly fishing and plan to. I am stingy with money, but going to soon start looking for a fit for what I want to do. soon I'll be throwing flies up the Unidilla river upstate NY.
I highly recommend fly fishing for sure! Check out the starter kits by Martin and Pfluger, they are reasonably priced and decent quality. I still use my Martin on small steams and I recently upgraded my set to an Okuma rod and reel.
Thank you very much!! I will check them out.
What a blessing to get out on a beautiful day and catch some nice rainbows this early in the year. Sorry about the bad luck with the camera. But, the gif of the bass is pretty cool. And the stills of the rainbows are fantastic.
Wrangling scenes while culling fish at the same time can be tough. lol Then add to that I never been there before. Thank you very much.
Haha, no doubt about that!
Nicely done. Looks like a great way to cure the dreaded cabin fever...
Thank you! It certaintly did, and I foresee lots of trout in my future.
Looks like a nice fishing trip!
Very nice! I am a little envious of you being able to get out and do some fishing. Really liked the pics of the rainbow. Good job, enjoyed the read and hopefully your can get out again soon and share that with us as well.
Thank you very much! There will be plenty in the future as long as I remember to hit record. lol
