也談談如何培養女兒的語文 / Language training of the girls 談談孩子的教和養（六）

今天土木大大的一篇關於如何處理孩子在多種語言環境下學習語文的文章，令我也想談談我家如何安排女兒們的語言學習。首先讓大家了解一下香港的客觀情況，就是在幼稚園開始，孩子們已經要學習兩文三語，即是：廣東話，普通話或國語，及英語。所以我們對女兒們的語言學習安排都是針對這兩文三語的。

This article briefly talked about how I built the environment for my daughters to learn languages, Cantonese, Mandarin and English. It was inspired by @tumutanzi's post regarding how kids learn languages under multilingual environment.

香港是一個國際大都會，每天都要使用英文，回歸之後普通話亦變得同樣重要。所以我們亦很注重這兩種語言的學習。因為我們本身的普通話真的是極之普通，所以在普通話方面，她們有對發音的問題的話，只可以靠隔壁的姨姨幫忙了，因為她是從國內搬來的，說得一口地道的普通話。再加上學校裏的正式教育，她們的普通話只會比我們強。至於廣東話及英文我們當然可以親自支援。

由於學校會教授文法，所以我們在家中則著重「說」。以我自己的經驗，香港人普通在講和聽英語或普通話方面比較弱。主要原因是：

1. 害羞
2. 缺乏練習機會
   為了克服這兩個點，我們的做法就是去營造一個環境讓她們長期浸浴在多言語的環境中，令她們習慣聽到英語，間中都會有普通話，亦要不時使用英語，雖然只是簡單的對答，但就會令她們習慣說英語。只要小孩子習慣了做一件事，她們就不會再害羞了。

I believe that the best way for kids to learn languages is to allow them to get in touch with the languages and let them practice more. That's why I build up an environment for my daughter so that they will be exposing to and using different languages all the time.

為了讓她們習慣聽到不同的外語，我們的方法就是給她們看喜歡的動畫及電影，條件就是必需要聽原來的語言，不可以聽廣東話配音。這是一個由她們不足一歲就已經開始的習慣，到現在已經7年多了。就算她們聽不懂動畫人物在說什麼，我發現她們都能夠接近100%將在動畫當中的對白說出來。當她們在學校及從日常生活中學到更多的詞彙後，她們就會明白那些每天都在聽或說的英語的意思和用途。不知不覺地就學會很多英語會話及運用。

Since my elder daughter was a few months old, we let her watch cartoons and listen to songs in different languages, till now it was already more than 7 years. Over this period of time, we insisted that they have to listen to the videos' original languages. we don't care if they understand the languages at that time or not. What we found out was no matter what languages they were listening to and it didn't matter if they understand that or not, they could still learn how to speak the lines of the characters inside a cartoon or sang the songs they heard. They will eventually realize the meanings of the lines or songs when they learn more vocabularies from school or daily life.

說到這裏，容許我發一發牢騷。因為上述的原因，我帶她們去看電影的時候，我一定要找原來語言的版本。但我發現香港大部分的電影院都只播放廣東話配音版本。要找到英語或日語原裝配音的版本往往要去到很偏遠的電影院或者是選擇很難配合的時間，例如平日早上8:00或晚上10:00的場次。原因是香港的家長大多要遷就小朋友，讓他們聽得懂，所以要廣東話配音的版本。有這樣的需求自然有同樣的供應。就只是苦了我們這樣的另類家長。而這些放棄了我認為最好的學習外語方法，卻樂意花費鉅款和時間給孩子找課堂外的補習。令孩子減少玩耍的時間，增加他們的壓力，又不見得更為有效。

除了日常環境之外，就像我之前的文章中提及的一樣，我們會不斷帶她們出國，把她們放在完整的外語環境中讓她們學習，習慣。讓她們直接跟外國人用外語溝通，這是最好的學習方法。雖然令到家中一貧如洗，我們還是覺得值得這樣做。

Besides, we like traveling with them. Traveling allows us to put them under native environments for them to get use to foreign languages, let them directly interact with people who speak foreign languages. This is essential for them to develop their language skills.

剛剛在美國加州玩了一個月，住在朋友家中女兒們跟著朋友的女兒過了一個月的美式生活。亦跟了她一樣的喜歡聽美國歌曲。因為朋友家中安裝了Amazon Echo, 小女孩們都習慣了開口叫這個智能家居系統給她們播歌。我特意買了一套Google Home回香港，使女兒們回到香港都可以繼續這個習慣，現在每天她們都用英語跟Google Home互動，有些時間因為發音不正，Google Home經常聽錯妹妹的指示。弄得她很不開心，向我們投訴。我們就鼓勵她學好發音並多多嘗試，現在她的發音已經進步不少。

After we returned from the one month California trip, my daughters developed the hobby of listening to English songs. This was because my friends home (where we stayed the whole month) had Amazon Echo installed and their daughters used it to listen to songs streamed over Internet and my daughters got used to the same practices too. Therefore, we were back to Hong Kong, I setup Google Home for them so that they can continue the practice in Hong Kong. They have to speak proper English in order to command Google Home and that's how they train themselves up without being forced by anybody.

這些一切都是我這窮爸爸給女兒們的投資，希望這種投資能為她們的將來打好基礎，那便值得了。

Of course doing all of the above cost me a fortune (that's why we are so poor) but I believe this is the best investment I can do for my daughters and hope that it will pays out well for them.
