Waterbuck and Wildebeests in the Maasai Mara
Hi I'm Danny! I'm travelling around the world! Follow me.
I'm staying in one of the many wildlife conservancies that border the Maasai Mara national reserve in Kenya. For the next couple weeks I'm going to try and post each evening from The Naboisho Conservancy.
Waterbuck & Wildebeest
The Maasai Mara is a large game reserve that borders Tanzania. The Tanzanian side opens out onto the Serengeti which itself is 7 times bigger. It's an absolutely enormous ecosystem.
The Maasai Mara is absolutely world renowned and most famous for its massive animal migration. Each year 1.5 million Wildebeest follow the greener grass North. This annual migration takes them across the Mara river which is full of crocodiles.
Lots of the Wildebeest get eaten and lots of them drown. The incredibly high numbers of Wildebeest (not to mention the Elands, Topi, and Gazelles) following the grass means there is a huge density of predators following them the whole way. The Lions follow them, the leopards follow them, and the cheetahs follow them.
I'll be visiting the Mara river in a week and I hope to get some pictures of the animals crossing.. Stay tuned!
