Travel - Exploring the City of Bordeaux in France

On my recent trip to France, we spent several days in the city of Bordeaux. It has a very active cafe and nightlife scene and was a fun place to visit. Walking from the port where we were docked one evening we saw the famous reflecting pool in front of the government buildings. It is only a couple of inches deep, so children and adults are often wading through it.

A little farther down the river, we came to a victory arch, which led us into a very lively bar and restaurant area.

A few streets back from the water, there was this incredible area with bars, restaurants, and outdoor cafes and all of them were packed. It was holiday season in Europe in August, so I imagine there were lots of visitors like us. It was like this for block after block.

The next day we took a walking tour of the city and one of the sights was the Cathedral of St. Andrew of Bordeaux. You can see its two spires in the distance in the photo below.

It was was one of many beautiful cathedrals we saw in France, but I have to admit, some of the carvings of the cardinals or whoever they were was a little creepy. Take a look at the one in the middle and you’ll know what I mean.

Not withstanding the creepy cardinals, the cathedral had some beautiful carvings , especially around the door pictured below.

As we cruised down the river the next night I got these shots looking back at the city. In the second one you can see the two spires of the cathedral.
