Black Thumb Chronicles : 25 Days Later
It's been a while since my last garden update. I have been taking progress shots but with everything going on with me and my body being weird, I haven't been able to sit down on a chair for long periods of time, so this post is days in the making and the update photos are 2 days old (sorry).
I decided to reset the garden time line to begin from when we planted everything in the garden back on the 10th of March. I'm not counting the time they spent in the bags.
(Blog best viewed on mobile so you can zoom in on photos.)
March 20 : 10 days after planting
Let's go back to March 20 when I did my last update blog. At this point the garden is a fresh 10 days old and you can see how small all the plants are.
March 26 : 16 days after planting
It's amazing how fast it grew in only 6 days
As you can see the tomatoes have gone nuts. So nuts we don't actually know what to do with the black russian since it seems determined to take over everything near it.
The bean plant is no longer visible. I have actually given up on that one and put it down as a sacrificial plant, only there to support and feed the tomatoes.
And look!! Our very first tomato!! How adorable is it?!!
April 4 : 25 days after planting
25 days in and you can see it's unstoppable. Click here to see what they looked like before.
During the Easter break, we ventured out of the house once and that was to go to Bunnings. The plan was to duck in and grab an orchid for my bathroom project but instead we walked out with herbs, a few terrarium plants and zero orchids. Yup. Go figure!
They were planted the same day. I took pictures, wanted to post it, but just wasn't well enough so you'll be seeing them already in the garden below after being in for a day or so.
The Salad Greens
This section is just insane. I have so much going on here than anywhere else and they all seem to exist together in harmony.
Mystery Lettuce now has 3 heads growing through it, there's also 2 Heirloom Lettuce heads and 3 more from the lettuce seedlings I planted. I got quite a bit of lettuce here...
You'll see the chives are still kicking after I cut a good chunk off the other day. The basils are super dead. I kept hoping they'd come back but nope.
The black thumb has claimed more casualties.
On the plus side the broccoli and the rocket are booming. I don't actually remember seeing rocket with big leaves before so I don't know if this is normal or not.
And on the off chance it would work, I dug in some garlic cloves. Why not right?
Tomat-row
My goodness.
When I planted these in I swear I tried to visualise how much space they would need and now realise that image in my head was a fairy tale.
The black russian was always our problem child. It was the main motivation to moving the whole lot out of the bags and into the garden. Even back then it was a beast, now it's gone "new world order" like dominating the veggie patch. I'm actually surprised how well the marigolds are holding up.
There are also a lot of baby tomatoes not just on the black russians but on the tommy-toes as well which seemed to have caught up quickly. I was worried about the one on the far left for a while but after seeing how fast the others grew, I was happy for it to dawdle a bit longer.
The beans are in there somewhere feeding the tomatoes. If I want beans I will need to put it somewhere else.
I also planted one of the basils I was propagating in here, along with garlic cloves and celery.
Eggplantia
An up and coming section
Eggplantia I reckon, could give Salad Greens a run for it's money in a couple of weeks.
Learning from my 'mint & direct sunlight' lesson, I planted one of my propagation mints behind the capsicum and so far so good! Another propagation experiment that made it in this section is the carrot. The one and only remaining after the weird carrot disaster I had with them.
Joining the crew are the new thyme and italian parsley, and more garlic.
Once I got cracking on the garlic I couldn't stop.
The poor snow peas is hanging on for dear life. I reckon its only got days to go before it's full dead.
Flower Power
Power definitely is the word and aside from the marigolds, I don't know what any of them are.
There's a particular one that's shooting up and is as tall as the old marigolds. Hubby's saying it's gonna be a tree....
I hope not. I pictured pretty daisies and stuff.
This is them now.
This is them 25 days ago.
Right?!!!
Side Note: I would love another colour flower. My Solar Plexus chakra has been getting a work out.
Bob's Batch
Where Bob at?
Bob's been busy especially with a few new plants to look after like the sage and brahmi (apparently great for memory). The sage I'm really excited about. I've always wanted to make my own smudging mix and this plant is the first of many I'll be growing for that purpose.
It has furry leaves. I was not expecting that.
Bob's done well with the strawberries. As you can see it's got a pretty pink flower on it which is what sold it to me. How the actual strawberries are I have no ideas, but hey, look! pretty flowers!
I also forgot to include one of the mints in the group shot. I hid it between Bob and the basil for shelter from the sun and elements.
A lot happens in the garden every day. It's the 6th of April today making the photos 2 days old. In the time since the photos were taken we had an 'episode' with the tomatoes where they all flopped to the ground.
As it was they're already an unmanageable and uruly lot and now they're flopping about. Hubby fixed it for now, how I don't know, but they're staying as upright as they're going to get.
We need to do another Bunnings trip to see what we can get for the tomatoes. I wonder if we can manage to walk out with what we went in for?
On the list
- Orchid plant
- Potting mix
- Tomato holderuperer
- Blood and Bone soil
Yup, the orchid plant made it back on the list. I really should have gotten it when we went last just to get it out of my system.
I have a bathroom project I really want to see come to life and I thought it would be an easy diy project but it's harder than it looks.
Tomorrow I'll go out in the yard to find the perfect stick for my project.
Are you curious?
Stay tuned!! For more details coming soon.

wow amazing blog, really complete and order, the way you follow the progress of your plants its impresive, i will try to be more focus and careful about my plants, really nice post =)!
Thank you :)
Your garden is really coming along!
ikr! can't bloody believe it Choo!
I love your garden! But what does Bob look like? For a second I thought Bob was the basil. 😂
I think your black thumb is turning green!
Did no one tell you tomato plants are evil? They get everywhere and take over everything! Our back patch at one stage was over 50% tomato (it was only supposed to be a few rows lol) and even the pumpkin vine climbed the fence and tried to escape XD
Your garden is looking pretty solid, and somewhat like a mini tomato farm ;D
So sorry to hear you are still not well, but this garden is amazing! I love it, so much going on and you cover every single little bit. Tomatoes are looking good, looks like you will get a really good crop. You even have some @snowpea - how amazing! Lovely post, so many pictures to enjoy and it's perfectly formatted as well - really enjoyed reading it.
