Curation: How are you doing? - Part 2

in #bisteemit7 years ago (edited)

How well are you curating financially? Are you making the best use of your Steem Power and votes?

This is a follow up post to a blog I wrote last week which looks at a possible method to work out just how well your curation skills rank against other Steemians.

Curation and it's rewards system is a complex beast. The structure of the how the rewards are decided upon for each voter have been explained many times in detail, and here's two I found (via google search, well done @calamus056) which I think do a good job:

https://steem.io/getinvolved/paid-to-curate/

https://steemit.com/steemit/@calamus056/curation-rewards-explained-in-great-detail

My takeouts from the above, and general opinion is:

  • Voting in the first minute will earn a curation reward of almost 0.000

  • Voting between 1 and 29 minutes will earn an increasing % of the curation rewards split, this value peaking at 30 minutes and remaining the same from this point onwards

  • The goal is to get in prior to the big hitters, but not too early in that your % in the 2nd point isn't too low (e.g. 15 minutes - approx 50%)

  • It is commonly suggested that 25-30 minutes is the 'best' time to vote (especially on known power-authors posts because they are likely to have more auto-votes coming in at these times)

As you can see, a combination of many variables such as Steem Power, voting strength, voting weight, and time of vote, (and more) all play a part in the amount of reward received. Is there a skill to it though? And how well I am doing?

I have used the following method to obtain what I need for this report.

  • Use steemit.com Wallet to collect Steem Power and + or - the leased/delegated steem

  • Use the 'Rewards' drop-down menu to find 'Curation rewards' for the previous week

Therefore, my data is gathered manually and the curation period is only for the previous week.

This is obviously not ideal and reduces the potential to widen the results set - maybe I can get some help with this, anyone?

This weeks result set with added users who showed interest in last weeks' blog:

sheet.png

The key columns are:

  • Curation: Total curation rewards for the previous week

  • SP Total: Total vested Steem Power (including delegated SP)

  • Curation/SP %: The % of curation rewarded Steem Power in relation to amount of Steem Power owned

This final column is what I feel is a genuine indicator of how well you are working the curation game with the tools (including vested Steem Power) that you have at your disposal.

Page-Break-7.png

Imagine you have 10,000 Steem Power, and I have 1,000 Steem Power.

After a week curating, the rewards for both of us are 1 SP each.

In my mind, I'm working my Steem Power 10 X harder - If you, in this example earned curation rewards of 10 SP, then I would say we were curating with equal skill.

The % of curation rewarded Steem Power in relation to amount of Steem Power owned

chart.png

  • Firstly, well done to @buggedout for topping this weeks' chart!

  • And well done to @dandesign86 for a huge improvement in curation this week!

  • Last weeks 'winner' @osm0sis was not as active this week and this has shown in her numbers

  • In the bottom 5 we have the lowest % of 0.01515 by @good-karma, and not far ahead @pharesim with %0.03749

  • The difference between the highest and lowest %'s is a staggering 25 X better ratio!

Page-Break-7.png

  • It's still debatable if a very large amount of Steem Power restricts curation performance using these figures

  • I consider it not very profitable if you were to trail @good-karma or @pharesim

  • If a user has powered down or powered up a lot of Steem in the past week, the results will be skewed

  • I'd love a better way to gather this data and am willing to pay (anyone?!)

Page-Break-7.png

A few points:

  • If you have spotted any glaring errors in my post, please let me know so I can fix them.

  • If you would like to be in my personal curation league (next weeks' post) let me know

  • If you have any other comments, please let me know below

  • My voting power has reached 85% (hurrah!) after a month below 50's - sorry for being mostly absent the last 4 days

  • We move to Mallorca in 2 days so are super busy packing our lives up, again!

  • Steemfest is only a month away!

  • Nepal is 5 weeks away! (more on Nepal, Steemfest, and Mallorca when I have some time)

And finally...

  • I feel that curation should be about finding awesome content and giving it an up-vote, irrelevant of the curation rewards you might receive.

Thanks for reading today

Asher

just checked mine.... I have 11.311 STEEM curated last week and my current ESP is 9008,, so how am I doing? average?

Hi!

Yes I would say better than average, you are the line on the right of this (rather small) chart.

Thanks for commenting!

If:
9008 is 100%
11.31 is X

X= 11.31 x 100 divided by 9008

X= 0.125

You are getting 0.125% of your SP in weekly curation rewards

that's the one!

Top of my charts this week, well done man!

good post as usual.

You could point out that the curation rewards lost by voting early are gained by the author. At least I think thats how it works

Very true, yes I will add that in this week.

Thanks!

Good effort this week!

Thank you so much for putting me on this chart! I see I have a lot of work to do to improve and now I will be studying for hours and days!!!! Such great info and I am so happy to see me next to @curie in results. But it looks like @dandesign86 knows more than me about how to do this trick effectively. We have almost the same sp but look at him go!

My goodness. This is an accountant's dream! (I am really an accountant in my earlier life). Please keep doing this :)

One side of my strategy is to find posts NO ONE is voting on and then promote them for about 5 days in all the ways I can - twitter, fb, steemit chat, linkedin, @jerrybanfield's "upvotable" posts and a few other steemers who offer similar places to drop links from your friends.

I think this has really made a difference in some posts. I look for a post with a hook and an author getting very low payouts - under $1 usually. Then when their payout goes over $10 for a particular post I promoted, I take full credit (in my own mind).

But in fact - if I upvote at 30+ minutes at a payout of less than $1 total - and then I promote the post and get others to jump in behind me for a few days - I DID do that. I almost never attract any whale votes, but I can get many, many smaller votes on a post and this makes a huge difference even without the big guns coming in.

You've just got my brain going crazy now - thank you! Now I have more specific goals, hopes and dreams for my curation efforts. Take that - you $.001 curation payout! I'm shooting for $1.00+ now :)

haha! If you ever get $1 curation reward you have to let me know!

Thanks for all your detailed replies, I think you are on the right lines with your methods and expect you to be marching up the charts next week!

Asher

I'm on it! You have me challenged now. I feel like the curation side of this place is woefully underused since so many people think it is worthless. I see it as adding sp, helping others, getting more engagement - all kinds of benefits. I'm so excited you dove into the numbers since I am WAY past my technical abilities here already! I will definitely be watching for more :)

I'm glad to hear it!

Actually the numbers are quite simple using this method - what's going on behind the scenes is another story entirely!

I'll be sure to do the same next week so folks can check if they've improved any.

Thanks for your interest! 😁

You did really well this week!

hahahahaha, I'm doing pretty bad with curation as mentioned to you earlier in a comment. WOW, 3 times worse then you do :) But still not at the bottom of this list though.

ha ha!

Well don't worry, always room for improvement!

Your vote is 'early' today - I would go for 23/24 minutes - i'm going to try minnowbooster at 25/26 minutes so you'll get some better curation this way if you remove and add in 3/4 minutes! :D

I am so random and vote whenever I feel like if I pause my steemvoter and have no idea what you 2 are talking about Hahha....
I guess I’m not doing that well in rewards

Just a little below average but not terrible!

I'm not so much focussing on curation rewards since they are very tiny compared to my post/comment reward (which are also pretty tiny but whatever :)). Coming week I may have a bit more time to analyses my favourite authors and I may setup some auto voting for them. I therefore looking forward to have me included in your analyses and your next posts.

Cheers @edje, I understand. The effort/reward ratio for many users makes it nothing to worry about - I do enjoy gathering the data though :)

Well done !!!
I really enjoyed your article and got inspired to inform myself much more about this topic but it sounds to complicated for me.... I am one of those spontaneous voters and got a bit lazy in recent weeks because it takes so much time to reply on my article’s comments.

The price of being popular eh! :D

The basics are to vote, with a good strength (50%+ power) on low valued posts (before the big guys arrive) at around 24-30 minutes. Large payout posts usually give you less than a gem you spotted early that say, went from .3$ to 15$.

Thank you! :D

It is indeed super you gather this type of data, I may reserve some time to see if I can at least double my results. Would be nice to see!

Need to check how I do

Great and amazing post. Thank you for nice analysis.

Thank you very much @tumutanzi! Nice vote timing for you i think! :D

fantastic post and analysis. I have been asking around to find out how I can extract just curators rewards from the database. at the moment I can extract all rewards but I dont know how to identify curator rewards. Once I have this information i will be able to help you automate this analysis as it is very useful.

Hi @paulag

This would be excellent, thank you for looking into this.

Asher

Just wanted to chime in some stuff that you might have not been mentioned here.

I don't personally go for max curation rewards as most of my voting power goes towards ocd nominations which usually are days old and won't see much more rewards after my votes. But the fact that I have a curation trail that follows my votes increases my rewards in relation to my voting power more than those not having curation trails.

Hey @acidyo

Thanks for your comments here, very happy you have stopped by!

I understand that you, and other bigger fish, are not all out for the rewards and have projects to support, meaning less time is focused on getting the max curation, and more about supporting a/the community. I'll add a note regarding this in my post early next week.

If you wish to be removed from my sheet next week just let me know. Thanks again for your comments!

Asher @abh12345

p.s. did i mention that I hate international weekend without Premier League football!

Hey!! I love this post I'll definitive referring back to it often I'm still new here !

Hi @learninvest-chan - Thanks for visiting, see you around then :D

I'd be interested to see where I am according to your metric. In days long gone by, I was the top curator on Steem; steemwhales is broken now, I can't easily check any more.

I'll add you to the list for the next update, perhaps next weds. Thanks for the tip 😁
