Between Thursday and Nov. 1, Florida's population of 1.3 million alligators may drop by about 15,000.

More than 15,000 applications were submitted for 7,679 permits to hunt alligators during the six-week season, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Each permit allows its holder to harvest two alligators, so up to 15,358 alligators could be killed this season. Typically, hunters kill about 70 percent of the harvest quota.

The heaviest gator harvested in Florida was a 1,043 pounder measuring 13 feet 10.5 inches taken April 17, 1989, in Orange County through the nuisance alligator program.

An alligator must be at least 18 inches long from snout to tail to harvest. If all you can see of an alligator is its head floating on top of the water, here's how to determine its length:
Estimate the number of inches between the bump on the gator's snout and its eyes.
That same number will be the distance, in feet, from the tip of the animal's snout to the tip of its tail.
사냥할 수 있는 악어는 주둥이부터 꼬리까지 18인치 이상으로 제한된다. 물위의 떠있는 악어의 머리 부분밖에 볼 수 없다면 다음과 같이 그 길이를 추정할 수 있다: 악어의 주둥이의 튀어나온 부분부터 눈까지의 거리를 인치로 가늠한 뒤, 그 숫자를 그대로 피트로 바꾸면 그 악어의 주둥이에서 꼬리까지의 길이가 된다.

Lower water levels should make alligator hunting at Lake Okeechobee especially good, Clanton said.
