Sayings Saturday # 2: Winning Today's Games

Yesterday's home runs don't win today's games. -Babe Ruth

I have been working in a company that already existed way before I was born. Packaged with it are the seniors and old processes which had been the pillars and stepping stones of the organization.

To be a newbie is sometimes a struggle especially if your job is to create or improve systems. There will always be some who already closed their minds from new ideas. They became comfortable with the methods that they already mastered. We got used to hearing them saying,

"before we only did this, but it still worked..the company was earning"
"we don't want to wear that safety gears, it's so uncomfortable"

It's worse when this mentality is already a culture. Anyone who has new ideas, can get discouraged to share it. Either a lot would rebut or just wouldn't listen.

What effect would it be if such mindset will power over the organization? Of course, the company's growth will be slower than those companys with upbeat hype for improvement. The company is leading more to continual rather than the continuous improvement.

Continual improvement happens in a recurring manner, that is in stages or phases with breaks in between.

Continuous improvement is something that is unceasing, happens in unbroken series.

For me, there should be both. Continual improvements for those that require higher budget or longer time to accomplish and continuous improvement for every employee's contribution in making his/her work more efficient and effective.

I might sound too idealistic, but one thing that will make these improvements possible is MOTIVATION. If employees feel that they are not well supported by the management, for sure, whether continual or continuous, improvements will be impossible.

So if somebody at work brags about his achievements before, just remember Babe Ruth's words. You will still got the chance to dash to your own homerun and win today's game.

Love lots,
