Her Thirties Part 59

Marilyn was back in her bed sleeping, safe from her stalker and Abe and I were sitting in her front room keeping guard.

“What now?” I asked.

“We go out for a bite to eat,” he yelped.

“Go out—and leave Marilyn?” My voice went up an octave.

“Those are my men out there. If I tell them to watch, they’ll piss their pants, before they take their eyes off that door.”

“Okay, okay—I trust you.”

“That’s good, Pal—cause I got my eye on you too.”

He made a vee with his two fingers and jabbed them at his eyes. I had to laugh.

“Where shall we go?”

“There’s Harvey’s burger place near here—I feel like a real hamburger for a change and fresh cut fries.”

“What’s the matter—McDonald’s not good enough for you?”

“Ha-ha. You try eating half your meals there—you’ll know what I mean.”

We drove to Harvey’s, got our meals and sat at a window booth. As we ate, I noticed Abe’s eyes were like a hawk’s—constantly moving, scanning the street.

“Do you ever relax?”

“Naw—it’s me. I’m not tense—just a habit. Always need to be aware of my surroundings. You should try it sometime.”

I got the not-so-subtle hint.

“How are you and Marilyn?” he asked softly.

“We’re good.”

“You guys lovers yet?”

I cracked a smile. “How long have I known her, Abe?”

“Long enough Pal.”

I shook my head. “She’s not like that—as you might guess, she’s an old-fashioned kind of girl.”

“From what I read of the Thirties, those times were pretty racy.”

“Yeah well, Marilyn’s not. She’s a really nice girl—you know what I mean?”

Abe’s voice softened. “Yeah, I know what you mean—Mitzy’s like that too.”

“I slept with Sam and thought I was happy—maybe even in love—but then, Marilyn walks into my lecture and just being with her is enough.”

“Hold that thought—I’ll ask you again in five years.”

“It’ll be the same, Abe—I assure you.”

“Really? How can you be so sure?”

“We’re connected.”

“You mean like soul mates?”

“Yeah—kind of like soul mates.”

He whistled softly. “Phew! I’ve heard about that—saw it in the movies—but how does it work. Did fireworks go off when you two met?”

“There were fireworks, believe me—but actually, it happened before we met.”

His dark eyes were huge. “I don’t get it—you lost me, Pal.”

I was trying to avoid it, but I guess the time arrived for my big disclosure.

“I know this sounds crazy, but I dreamt about Marilyn before I even met her.”

He sucked hard on his straw, trying to draw up the thick chocolate shake. I knew his mind was going a mile a minute, but he did a good job of not showing it.

“How can you dream about someone you never met?” He asked suddenly.

“I don’t know,” I said, frankly, “You tell me.”

“How the hell can I tell you?”

“You introduced me to Marilyn.”

“Whoa—hold on, Pal—I didn’t play matchmaker here—I merely suggested to her you taught a course about the Thirties. She did the rest.”

“Don’t you see?” I countered, “You came to me about the Thirties cold case—you’re the agent of action in this little drama.”

“What are you saying—that life is some imitation of art or something? You think I’m orchestrating this like a play?”

“I’m saying you’re an unwitting instrument. But who knows? Maybe Fate’s moving us all around like pieces on a chessboard.”

Abe sat staring off into space trying to wrap his mind around my words—Me? I was simply trying to live day by day and keep Marilyn safe. I couldn’t think beyond that.

Man I needed a good read today as it has been hell, seriously hell. I cannot say this enough you motivate me to fight so I can write something thats been in my head along time. My latest treatment, alternative treatment starts as my GoFundMe my friends did is almost at the money needed. I wanted to say that my doctor is thankful too. we chat about things and I told him your writing keeps me on my toes lol. Again thank you. I hope the snow there not bad lol. BTW another great photo here

thanks, Brian - the snow is gone and we've had temps in the 40's all week. I'm glad the writing helps and the alternative treatment should help your well being as well :)

I don't believe Scott Dreamt about her, I think it is the memories they shared in the past. I love the way you wrote Scott confession about Marilyn to Abe.
They shouldn't get carried away with the discussion, Marilyn is there she needs protection.

Thanks for today episode.

thanks, Tomiwa - I think Scott's unsure of what is reality and a dream, and right now, a nightmare :)

I thought as much. I hope he can separate reality from dream soon

Poor guy ... it appears his own mind is doing him in. I've been there and made the similar bad romantic decisions ...

you just don't like that girl :)

Never been a fan of women who play up their weaknesses to pray on others. I guess that says something about me ...

It does... Literature is full of fainting heroines and only a few Moll Flanders

Long live the Moll's then:):):)

always loving your series am super ,
