How to Personify an Object. Transform Your Writing Day 8
This activity will help you bring depth to your characters.
Take a simple object such as a rock, a toy, or a pencil, and bring it to life.
If the object could talk what would it say? What does it think and feel? What does it do all day, is it helpful or discarded, what does it observe, and what are it's reactions?
Develop a character profile and perhaps a back-story. Write an inner monologue for this object.
The act of personified an object will stretch your imagination and trigger you to recognize often overlooked traits, thereby training you to develop your characters on a deep level.
Today's task is to do just that- Personify an object. See my example Shoe. Note how Shoe has feelings much like any human.
After you have a few of these under your belt it's time to step it up. Brainstorm a list of the most detached, impersonal, and dispassionate objects you can think of and challenge yourself to bring life and character into increasingly difficult inanimate objects.

I missed your writing yesterday but would have to go back and read it. When you personify an object, i believe it makes it easier to write about, to describe
Exactly! And, such as with the example I shared with Shoe, it creates an emotional response. When you can create an emotional response in your readers from an object, your skills in that important aspect of writing are profound and memorable!
The easiest objects to bring life to are plushies and pillows. A recent one is a poo emoji pillow I got at Canadian Tire lol It sits in my office, keeping everything in it safe, smiling. And enjoys it when I talk to it.
The latest object that has a name and perhaps personality is EDI, my new Canon Powershot SX730, which I'll be showing off soon. Named after a character from the Mass Effect trilogy, she is slick and silver, but she gets tired easily and more quickly than Bianca (my Sony). Got her on Monday. Today I found ways to help her conserve her energy (battery life).

You are so right! One of my favorite freewrites was the prompt "pen" my hubs was helping me brainstorm and he suggested I personify a pen and write it's story. It was sooo much fun! It definitely reached in my head for that long lost creativity...like when I was a kid...and then it just flowed!
I didn't realize how enjoyable personifing objects could be until I found the #freewrite community and brought Shoe to life!
