Drone Man, the Portland Hero who Uncovered a Floating Bike Chop Shop on the Willamette River

in #writing7 years ago (edited)

As a Portlander, I've seen some shit. This is a famously weird city that the TV show Portlandia only somewhat exaggerates. If you watch that show or read the /r/portland subreddit, you probably know that Portland has a bike theft problem. Of course that's a problem in every city, but Portland takes it to a new level.

As in, to the level where we've got floating bicycle chop shops on the Willamette river. Ain't that some shit? It's like Waterworld but with meth and stolen bike parts. The meth problem and the homelessness problem are the other two factors.

Though the homelessness problem is in part a result of the steep housing prices, if the newly homeless didn't get that way because of meth, that's what winds up keeping them homeless for the long term. It's a vicious cycle. A vicious...bi-cycle...if you will.

This is why I don't take my bike downtown. Even if I kept my eyeballs on it the entire time, it would somehow get stolen. Criddlers (especially fucked up tweakers) abound here, and criddler tent colonies are always strewn with bike parts. They steal the bikes, take them apart, mix and match with parts from other bikes so it's not provable they were stolen, then fence 'em for money to buy more meth.

It's not hard to understand how someone gets trapped, or traps themselves, in this lifestyle. What's hard to understand is how it spirals out of control to the point where we've got floating criddler colonies.

It shows the lengths people will go to in order to facilitate their addiction. Hold down a job so you can afford both rent and meth? Fuck that. Build mini trashpunk seasteads where you tear down and reassemble bicycles? No problem(???)

In fairness, there are plenty of "hoboats" on the Willamette, and colonies consisting of multiple hoboats which are not involved in bike theft. They just live there because a used boat was cheaper than land, and it's harder for cops to come out and hassle them to move when they live on the water.

However, we've also got hobos living on a few of the larger islands in the middle of the river. Same basic reason, it deters cops, though they still get raided now and then. They're instructed to move, but don't, and understandably not much is done to punish them. Where are they supposed to go?

Enter Droneman. The anonymous drone operator who, using his DJI drone, revealed candid close up looks at the lifestyles of these rare island criddlers:

He's also managed to get some invaluable footage of hoboats with multiple bicycles, some partway disassembled, which provide mounting evidence of illegal activity taking place on these boats and floating platforms:

By far his most famous discovery was the hobarge, a cobbled together floating chop shop (Without a doubt, based on the bike parts in plain view) which consists of a liveaboard boat with an adjacent floating platform and small dinghy for traveling to and from shore.

This is far from the only such operation, but it is the most elaborate we've seen so far. The footage attracted the attention of local news, who were permitted to use it providing Drone Man could remain anonymous. For obvious reasons, he'd be in a fair bit of danger if his identity were public knowledge:

He's hung up the cape since then, wanting to avoid the spotlight for his own safety. But the criddler/bike theft/meth problem hasn't disappeared or even diminished since then. Perhaps someone else with a drone will step into his shoes?

This isn't a solution to the complex interrelated problems of substance abuse, homelessness and bike theft. But it does supply a more intimate and awareness-cultivating view of the problem than was available prior to the proliferation of consumer drones.

The attention which the use of these drones attracts to such social problems may yet play a role in hastening political solutions. Drone Man was never looking to profit off the misery of criddlers, or make himself famous. If anything he's only endangered himself in the process.

Instead, he (and possibly subsequent drone-vigilantes to come) fight crime by shining a spotlight on it. The power of drones to bring images of previously hidden social problems into the view of the public has, in my opinion, only just begun to be tapped.

Sort:

That is pretty wild. I guess I lack a criminal mind for I would never have conceived of a floating bicycle chop shop. Trust me, I grew up next to Newark, NJ, I know all about stolen autos and chop shops.

As I watched that first video, all I could think was, "Oh hell. Even if I finally find some isolated, rent-free place to live, I'm still not going to be able to walk around in my undies because of some guy with a drone." This is what happens to your thinking when you live in a place with crazy high rents.

When I lived upstate I remember how I used to see junk yards . But this is the next level . It's like an undercover island

This is alarming, the amount of trash they are leaving in the water and on those islands. Odd that I have never thought about homeless people living on the water.

Stay safe out there, I have a feeling some of these boats are mobile meth labs to.

What the shit? This is so bizarre to read about. You'd HAVE to be fucked up on meth to think up an idea like boat shop chops. Jeez.

Welcome to Portland. This shit is just the tip of the iceberg, haha. More good weird than bad weird, but the bad stuff is beyond the pale.

@alexbeyman,
"Criddlers" are not making at a single day! I mean they born as normal people, but the social problems force them to spend that kind of life! In my country we have the same kind of problem! Some islands, some areas are look like hidden grounds for criddlers! And sometimes they steal vehicles! Yeah, that's a big problem as you said "Even if I kept my eyeballs on it the entire time, it would somehow get stolen." yes that might happen and yeah it can be my car :D
As you said, most of those money they are using for drugs :/ Yep, this becomes a great social problem now a days!
Actually the person who took this video is endangered his life for it! Just imagine "If he found" what will happen? Definitely his body will flow at the same river and "who cares"!
Actually no idea how to resolve such mind of social matters! But I can assure, drug sellers are not criddlers! They made them and they spend luxury lives out there!

Really appreciate this great article! Nice work my dear friend!

Cheers~

Vicious By-Cycle? fuck off. Every person that makes a pun should be...punished.

At least buy me dinner first

Its a hard thing to deal with. I once was in a town that rounded up all the homeless and threw away all their stuff in a effort to "clean up" the town. This was like throwing away someones home. When the homeless people were released from jail burglaries went sky high. They just went out and got more stuff. So then people with homes had to file claims with insurance and the same police were backlogged with all the reports.
I wish we could just stop trying to make things worse spending so much money, and take the same amount of money and give them mini homes.
You got to admit that would be cool to live on the river, right?

Google the "housing first" movement. It's gaining traction in the US.

@alexbeyman - Hi Alex, i am really sorry, i just saw your article. When i am going through this post, i just thought what is going to happen for these people.. Actually, in between these homeless people and the drugs, there is a big connection(a bond) these days. The reason is , these people are highly suffering from poverty and also they are innocent. But the thing is, they are addicted to drugs. And, the most disappointment is, the people who are selling drugs to them leading a luxury life.
And, those innocent people, try to smuggle.Because, somehow they need to find some money for Drugs.
In my country , the Police only catch these smugglers, not the one who are selling Drugs to them. Actually, this is a disaster. And few weeks ago, the side mirrors of my brother's car, has been stolen. So what the Police said is, there was a Drug addicted person behind this robbery. That's it.
Truly, i don't know who to blame. This is the current situation of any other country now a days. What to do my friend. this has becoming a major social problem.
Great work friend.Highly appreciate your effort for discussing this social problem with us.... I would like to ReSteem your post.
