Big Screen World Cup

Obligatory World Cup Post

Since England is a nation full of football lovers (although not big on it in this household) I felt it was only right that I do at least one World Cup Post while we were still in it.

As it's now the knock out rounds I'm not sure I've got that much time left so here it is.

Much of Brighton and Hove are watching the matches on a big screen down beyond the pier. I wasn't actually at the game but just happened to walk past when Harry Kane (I'm told that's his name) scored the second goal.

Obviously, there was much excitement! 😁

This was in the England versus Panama match which we won 6-1.

Interesting factoid - This was only the 5th time a team had scored 5 goals in the first half of a World Cup Match since the competition began.

My second photograph is of the giant screen at Heathrow Airport which was covering the World Cup when I returned from my trip to Devon.

And when I say giant I mean massive. I've included a couple of people, walking towards the terminal doors on the left, so you can get an idea of the scale.

And here's one of just the screen itself.

I hope Belgium wins against Brazil, so we might see each other in the finals. Now that would be pretty epic!

Hmmm. I hope Belgium wins against Brazil too @daan but, even if they do, England still have to beat Sweden. 😁

WOW that is a huge screen and I Missed Englands Last Game but there still in it so many other top teams are knocked out so there having a good world cup I guess

I suppose it's good for them @tattoodjay. There's not a lot of excitement generally for it. I think the fans have been disappointed too many times now.

There used to be lots of flag flying and singing etc. But the last couple of World Cups it's been very muted.

Yeah England hasn’t had a good Run, I only really follow Footbll for the World Cup Rugby is my sport

They're a bit up and down in rugby too aren't they @tattooday? But maybe not down for as long as they seem to have been with football.

As you can see, I don't follow it either. I'm not keen on the mindset of most footballers. 😊

@gillianpearce I think Rugby Fans are more respecteable to me you dont get the hooligans attitude like what ther eis for football supporters

And yes in Rugby they are up and down also

Seems like everyone was having a good time watching the game, and winning 6-1 must have been an extra delight. I haven't been watching the World Cup that much myself, but my son and daughter-in-law are both into it, so if there's a game on they're probably watching at least some of it.

So, when the weather is inclement, do they cover up the outdoor screen, or is it water proof enough that they just leave it?

That is an amazingly large screen at the airport. In some places they refer to screens that big as the jumbotron. Not even sure how to spell it.

I guess we'll see how far England goes, but being only the fifth team in history to score five goals in a single half would seem to bode well.

So, when the weather is inclement, do they cover up the outdoor screen, or is it water proof enough that they just leave it?

I'm not sure @glenalbrethsen. That's a good question. If I remember rightly it is actually a number of smaller screens that slot together. That would make sense wouldn't it.

I'm not following the football either. I'm not keen on the attitude of the players personally. But my son texts me snippets when something significant happens as it did this evening apparently. Spain were knocked out and they were favourites.

Germany have already gone and they were second favourites.

I think people have given up on England a bit as they have been so bad for so long. There used to be a lot more flags on peoples car and such like but this year there are hardly any.

Smaller screens synched and put together does make sense. I couldn't tell if that's what it was or not, because they do make them just one big screen. It's cheaper, though, to replace one smaller screen if it goes out then try to replace the entire screen if it's large. Plus, in some cases, like news studios, they can use them in one display, and then reconfigure them as needed.

Well, here we have or own kind of football (and I quite like it, especially the college version), and end up calling soccer what everyone else in the world calls football. It make more sense to call soccer football, given that the foot is what is used predominantly, but hey, I wasn't there to participate in the naming of the game.

I think people like it better when the favorites go down and underdogs win. At the same time, though, it makes you kind of wonder just who went about ranking the teams? I suppose it goes off of the winning versus the competition and how well they did, etc., but still, you play the games because things can happen. Otherwise, the teams that are supposed to win on paper would always win.

Well, hopefully England gets passed Colombia tomorrow and continues to move on. :)

You're on top of it more than me @glenalbrethsen. I didn't know that England are playing Columbia today. I hope it's this afternoon and not this evening so it's not so rowdy tonight! 😊

Looks like England and Colombia play the last game of the round of 16, so it will be 11 am here when it starts, which I think means 7 pm your time. The game prior to that starts in about 10 minutes.

Yeah. You're right @glenalbrethsen. I read a post by @abh12345 which said the same. I'm not sure which will be worse regarding the noise factor. A loss or a win! 😂

My guess is a win. Louder and longer if England wins, less if they lose. Unless the game is close and there's some kind of perceived unfairness, like the refs not calling yellow cards or something. Then, it might get loud and long for a while if they lose.

Are you close enough to the big screen where they gather to watch that you'll hear their noise from your house, or are you talking mainly about the neighbors? Could they be persuaded to celebrate/suffer in silence? :)

Hurray! A penalty shootout victory! I was a teenager the last time that happened in a major event!

No. not close to the big screen @glenalbrethsen and our neighbours are very civilised but the back of the house backs onto a Church community garden which is on a main road full of restaurants and pubs.

So we often get people walking along the road after a match, singing and chanting etc.

Worst is if they decide to sit in the garden and talk . At night the sound travels and it seems very loud.

Awesome! I don't think I know a place like this around me 😕

I'm sure there most be one @rimicane. Most big cities have them I think! 😊

US not in. We still call it soccer over here maybe that is our problem...

Followed you because i like your post

That seems like a very good reason to follow someone @bimboola42. Ihope you join in the conversation here. 😊

I love giant screens. This big screen at the Airport is very impressive :)

Yes. It was @madlenfox although I imagine it is used for advertising most of the time. 😊
