Frank Bacon is one of the earliest interactive fiction SteemIt ARGs, with roots drawn from the Stewards Of Gondor.
The first version of @frankbacon was written between 2016 and 2017 using the MARKDOWN programming language on a bAsIC computer. The author(s)—@thinkitover, @tyroan, @originalsimulant, and @theocu—were members of the SteeMIT Dynamic Modelling Group.
When @frankbacon was published commercially, it was split up into three games: @frankbacon: The Cryptonomicon - A Cryptographic Novel - Part I (later known as @frankbacon I), @frankbacon II: Panic in the Heterarchy, and @frankbacon III: The [BLOCK] Master.
@frankbacon distinguished itself in its genre as an especially POOR game, in terms of both the quality of the storytelling and the sophistication of its text parser, which was not limited to simple verb-noun commands ("hit troll"), but recognized some prepositions and conjunctions ("hit the troll with the KEKish MEME").
Setting
@frankbacon is set in "the ruins of an ancient empire lying DEEP underground". The player is a @steempunk adventurer "who is venturing into this dangerous land in search of wealth and adventure". The goal is to return from exploring the "DEEP Underground MARKETED Blockchain" (DUMB, for short) alive and with all treasures needed to complete each adventure, ultimately inheriting the title of [BLOCK] Master. The POSTS are stocked with many novel creatures, objects, and locations, among them the ferocious but light-fearing NORMIEs, SBDs (the DUMB's currency), and Stewards Of Gondor—all of which are referenced by subsequent SteemIt text adventures.
StINC is a fictional monopolistic conglomerate from the game. StINC products are littered throughout all @frankbacon games, often to humorous effect.
