Long-awaited Wednesday Walk. The Saint Andrew's Church, Kyiv, Ukraine
Wednesday Walk is a challenge started by @tattoodjay. The author explained the guidelines as :
Try and get out once a week for a short walk, can be from your office, home or anywhere really and walk for a few blocks or a few minutes looking for things to get shots of.
Your walk does not have to be on a Wednesday I just ask if possible to share your walk photos on a Wednesday.
Try and get a few shots not just one
Also, Wednesday Walk is collaborating with the Make Me Smile hosted by @elizacheng, and I hope you'll have fun with me on this virtual walk.
The other week I posted a black and white abstraction, and asked you to guess what is it. Also, I promised @tattoodjay to show the whole picture, and to @janton to finally show some pictures of Ukraine as he doesn't believe I really live here, LOL.
The promises given to friends must be fulfilled. These are pictures, taken on nice sunny day in the very center of Kyiv. It is The Saint Andrew's Church build in a wonderful baroque style. It is one of the most recognized symbols of Ukrainian capital .
The church designed by the Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli, and constructed in 1747 - 1754.
Here are those stairs in color:
The church stands on the top of a hill. Most of the time the church and the viewing place around it were closed. On that day they open access to a viewing platform where one can observe picturesque neighborhoods.
Name "Podil" means the bottom of something. As you can see, it was the lowest area in an old Kyiv.
And here you can see something worth to be mentioned. A Podil Bridge.
It is rusted, but it is not old at all. In fact, Kyiv is a city with almost 3 million of citizens, and it faces a lack of bridges every day. There are only 4 bridges for vehicles (and 1 more railway bridge).
So, we all had great expectations on this new bridge when its construction was started 15 years ago, in 2003. Now it is another symbol that the city can't be proud of - the symbol of terrible corruption.
It is now one of the most expensive bridges in the world.
Can you believe it? So far, it has already consumed 4 bln of local currency, and the whole construction's estimated cost is $430 million. Do you still believe that Ukraine is a poor country? I'd say noone can guess would it be finished one day, and when.
But enough of sad things. Let's back to the hill. In the middle of it there is a nice alley with art market. To be honest, from the top of Andriivs'kyi descent that starts from the church, it is all a touristic area with restaurants, coffee bars, art shops and galleries, for any taste and budget. Every salesman here speak English, but be carefull, "all that glitters is not gold", I mean that not all that is declared to be made in Ukraine, is really made here.
And the last one is of me and the cityscape just to say Good Bye!
Special thanks to @elizacheng and @tattoodjay for collaboration and support!
Regards,
@zirochka
