Wednesday walk challenge times are a changing and Steem Basic Income Give away

Wednesday Walk is a challenge started by me, the idea is to get out for a short walk and get some shots of what you can see within a short distance of your home office or wherever you start. And this is my entry for this week, but first, let me explain the challenge.

This is my post for the Wednesday Walk challenge hosted by myself, let me first explain the guidelines

Try and get out once a week for a short walk, can be from your office, home or anywhere really and walk for a few blocks or a few minutes looking for things to get shots of.

Your walk does not have to be on a Wednesday I just ask if possible to share your walk photos on a Wednesday.

Try and get a few shots not just one

You can look for anything in general or decide on one subject you want to get shots off.

Try to limit yourself to a set distance or time from the starting location, say 5 Blocks, 5 Minutes walk or whatever and see what you can find in that short distance

Make a point of looking around and up and see what you can find to get shots of that otherwise you may miss

Do a post with the shots you get on a Wednesday and tag it with #wednesdaywalk, also if you happen to join, please leave a link to your post in a comment on this post and I will try and visit them all.

Following me and resteeming the post so more see it would be appreciated but isn't a rule just a suggestion, but you may have a better chance of receiving a Steem Basic Income Share if you do.

I am not strict on these rules and hence why they are called guidelines and not rules

I will try and visit, resteem and upvote all who take part in the Wednesday Walk, plus I will be sending @steembasicincomeshares to a selection of those who participate.

My Wednesday Walk post for this week

I did a post for a wednesday walk a little while back featuring phone booths, but in that post I mentioned they were becoming less common in the city and at the time I took those photos I also took shots of what was replacing them, but never got around to sharing them, which happens to be good as I could go back to that walk for this weeks post, since I didn't get out for a walk and photos for this weeks post.

And these are springing up all around the city where telephonebooths used to be, they are Link NYC Wifi terminals and they are being deployed all over the city.

And here is anothe rone of them, where I did a B&W edit with a colorsplash on the screen, which highlight sof of the things these Lynnc terminals do advertising on the big screen.

incase your wondering did I do a walk or just take photos of one of these terminals from different angles, it was actually on a walk and there are shots of a few different ones within about a 10 block radius of my office.

But the big screen is used for more than just adverts, they also give information on public transportation schedules, including subways buses and trains, show the weather foreacast and other odd facts about the city.

And they even replace the old phone booths with the ability to make calls to anywhere in the country and unlike the phone booths this service is offered free of charge.

And I should mention these terminals also provide free wifi, which is handy for visitors to the city, but a feauture I also have used a few times when theoffice Wifi was down for a period of time due to some technical issues.

The blue screen highlighted in this shot is the screen you can use to make calls, most who I have seen using it plug in a set of headphones like one uses on their phone to make calls to have some privacy, but it also has a built-in speaker that can be used for calls as well, I do not see too many people making calls as most people have cell phones these days but have occassionally seen people making calls or charging their phones.

And a closer in shot of the Panel where you can make phone calls, to anywhere or at a quick button push to 911, also you can see where you can plug in a USSB cable to charge your device if needed.

And finishing off with another colorful shot showing another advertisement on one of these terminals.

Steem Basic Income give away

I mentioned in the guidelines that from this week I will be sponsoring a few who join the #wednesdaywalk challenge with shares on Steem Basic Income

What is Steem Basic Income you may ask well here is how they explain it

Steem Basic Income is a social experiment to bring a basic income to as many Steemians as possible. Members join by sponsoring others into the program. Steem Basic Income is delivered through providing regular upvotes to member content. so I have decided to randomly send some Steem to add shares for some of my followers so on the weekend
I sponsored the following people, @kamichan, @boddhisattva, @tijntje, @singa, @ellenripley, all people who joined in last weeks Wednesday walk .

And a special bonus this week @elizacheng will send one SBI share to @old-guy-photos

I would love to be able to give everyone who joins a Steem Basic Income share, but I don't make enough steem each week to do so, but I will try and share them around fairly between those that join the challenge

I hope a few of you may find this an interesting challenge and decide to join in.

That is really cool and an awesome way for them to re-purpose something that has become outdated. I am not sure where superman is going to change into his suit now though. :) That is interesting that your work allowed you to use the public WiFi. I would have guessed that might be a no no.

·

Yes it could be a big challenge for Superman, but then again the old phone booths were not ideal for him Either, the English style Phone Boxes were few and far between here LOL

I think it is a cool Initiative, and my PHone connects to them when I am walking around the city.

As for a no no to connect tot hem at work, that is true, and funnily enough part of my Role is Security related and recommending not to do that, but I never connected with my Work Laptop to them, Just my Personal phone and iPad :)

·
·

Ah, that makes sense. I was out in Vegas for a bachelor party one year and it happened to be the same time that Defcon was going on. I had to make sure to let everyone know not to connect to any wireless with their devices the whole time we were there. There was one instance where the elevator system of one of the casino hotels got hacked. Crazy stuff!

·
·
·

Back when I had a work phone i never connectedit to wireless anywhere and especially not in Vegas, one of the Data Security Conferences I went to was on at the same times as a Hackers Conference of some type so I was extra cautious then LOL

I normally only connect my iPad to the work Network as I do work on it from time to time, but when we were in one of the buildings they had issues for about a week so I made use of the Lync System, but they have two levels an open WiFi, and you can sign up ( still free ) and get onto a secure network which I did.
MY Personal Phone I use the secure Lync System from time to time, but I keep all my work and confidential personal data off my phone and do all that on a PC or on the IPad on a secure network, I know I should probably be more cautious with my Phone but i really use it mainly just for social networks, weather and calls, no banking or anything like that

·
·
·
·

That makes sense, I can understand wanting to keep your personal stuff off the work network and your work stuff off the public network.

·
·
·
·
·

Its Just the way I am, always have tried to keep the two separate :)

Thank you for Wednesday Walk @tattoodjay, thank goodness I can write a post for this again, been walking between our bnb guest units these past few weeks, but managed to get out for a change and share this walk with you!
Here is a brief look at Valley of a 1000 Hills, hope you enjoy it!

Wow! This is interesting... So basically (if the service is fully functioning), we get free Wi-Fi, free phone call, free charging phone or any USB chargeable devices?

Posted using Partiko Android

·

YEs and it works very Well, and i guess the advertisingon the screen pays the company for the setup so its a such a cool idea

This is such a cool service provided by these carriers! I was not familiar with it, especially as much coverage as it has!

Thanks for showing me the growing and changing city that never sleeps. As an aside, your edits are just superb, especially as you accentuate the pop of color in the monochrome shot. You really know how to make a picture work hard! :))

·

I think they had a brilliant idea and obviously it is working well for them with advertising as more are appearing all the time, an I read recently they are also going to expand to other big cities, How a simple phone booth when we were young is not replaced with all this technology is pretty impressive isnt it

·
·

Absolutely! It is the one of the best ideas I have seen happen!

·
·
·

Me to I was so impressed when I saw the first few of them but wondered if it would be viable I am glad to see it is

·
·
·
·

Me too! I love to see things repurposed and to have it actually work.

·
·
·
·
·

We are in Synch on this then , Some of the new ideas I wonder why, but this to me is such a common sense solution so useful to many

🎁 Hi @tattoodjay! You have received 0.1 STEEM tip from @dswigle!

@dswigle wrote lately about: Tree Tuesday Feel free to follow @dswigle if you like it :)

Sending tips with @tipU - how to guide :)

This is quite helpful, isn't it? Especially wifi and charging your device.
I think it is well thought.

·

YEs indeed i think its brilliant and must be doing well as they are expanding

Howdy JJ! wow those are pretty cool! all that information, charge your device, make free calls, push button 911, those do alot and for free! Tax dollars at work unless the city didn't pay for them but they look like city things don't they?

·

I am not sure if the city-sponsored them or anything like that they may have done, but the company that sets them up and runs them is a private company, and they keep expanding so I guess they are making money, I have heard they are planning to expand to other cities as well

·
·

oh very interesting, if everything is free on those stations I guess they have some advertising on them unless the city just pays for them.

·
·
·

Yes they do have advertising on the big screen, well it rotates between a few things fun city Facts, train times, local art and of course the advertising to pay for them :)

Okay, while I have a wicked sentimental attachment to old school phone booths, I have to say version 2.0 is pretty cool. George Jetson would approve. 😊

·

Yes I do believe he would and this is one change I do like 😎

·

Thanks so much :)

🎁 Hi @tattoodjay! You have received 0.1 STEEM tip from @traciyork!

Sending tips with @tipU - how to guide :)

Its really amazing telephonebooth. I have enjoyed it.

·

They are a cool change I think

Fascinating! For some reason, I started thinking of pagers while looking at your photos. The world has changed so much, and yet technology often takes two steps back despite its modern design...

·

Ohh I remember when pagers first came out and I was stuck with one, they were such a pain for us worker bees but great for the bosses lOL

·
·

Yes! I remember having to find a parking spot when driving to check my messages. But hey, it was the height of technology at the time. Kids don't know what they missed LOL

·
·
·

Or the old dial phones, I am sure most of todays kids would struggle to use one to make a call

Excellent shots as always! Love the color splash edits! voted & resteemed.

Thanks Kindly and I loved your walk, such a pleasant and relaxing walk I got from your post :)

·
·

Thanks, mate! ;-)

·
·
·

Most welcome

This is a great idea. I'm sure providing these services costs very little and is very nice amenity for visitors. Thanks for #wednesdaywalk @tattoodjay!

·

Yes I do agree I am sure they make more than enough from the advertising to allow expansion and still a good profit, I remember reading somewhere they plan to extend to other cities

Wow those are really cool! Wondered what
maybe we would see soon after seeing the
old phone booths post. Real space age eh,
almost the Jetsons time, flying around with
billboards in the sky lol
Love the colorsplash one, that looks so cool!

We have to use two moose and a string
up here! :-)

·

I think they are a brilliant idea and look so much better that the dirty old phone booths

Thats sounds good and yes Steem and SBD had a bit of a bounce lets hope it holds

it is very interesting! I have not seen anything like it. This is convenient in cases where your phone for some reason does not work and you need to urgently call. in Israel there are similar facilities for charging the phones on the streets. but what you showed is completely different. thank!

·

I to have seen charging stations in places particularly airports train stations etc including in Israel but this takes it one step further and a great idea 😎👍

·
·

yes, this is something completely new

and serves so many purposes :)

What a wonderful and generous project this is!! You are an inspiration for being generous, kind and supportive!
