For those who aren't familiar with the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game, those game sessions have a pretty high mortality rate for characters. I figure just under half of the characters I've played in that game were either driven permanently insane or were gruesomely dispatched by otherworldly horrors... and I consider that doing pretty well. Now I'm not saying ALL GM's get a special thrill from a gruesome character death or a total party kill... just all the ones I know ;)
As for Cam's complaint about new versions of D&D, that's taken almost word for word from one of my friends who usually goes by the online handle of "Doctor X". Personally I thought he was being a little dramatic... that is, until some years later after I got my first look at D&D 4th edition. The horror, oh the horror...
