Her Thirties Part 64 Under Surveillance

After my dinner date with Marilyn, I got home just past eleven and was surprised to hear the phone ring. When I picked up, I was even more surprised to hear Abe’s happy voice yelp on the line, “Hey Pal—how was your date?”

“It was all good—hey, how did you know?”

“Who knows what lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow sees everything.” He added a sepulchral laugh.

The line from the 1930’s radio show was oddly significant.

“Hey,” he said soberly, “I’ve still got you guys under surveillance.”

His remark brought me back to earth. “Oh yeah, I almost forgot.”

“Don’t forget. There’s somebody out there that wants Marilyn dead—and maybe you too, if you get in the way.”

“You’re such a positive guy, Abe.”

“Ha-ha, I am Pal. Anyway, remember that dealer who wants to buy your car? Well, he wants to do the deal tomorrow—wants me to bring you by after work.”

“Great. Any idea what he wants to give me for the car?”

“Like I said—that’s strictly between the two of you. I don’t get involved in any business.”

A suspicion crossed my mind. “This ‘dealer’, Abe—he’s on the up and up, right?”

“Are you crazy—why would you ask that? I’m a cop—of course, he’s legit—well, as legit as used car dealers get.”

“I’ll take that as a yes,” I chuckled.

“I’ll drop by your apartment tomorrow about one—Oh, and bring all the papers, he said—he wants this all to be done aboveboard.”

“Heh, heh. I’ll bet he does. I’ll have them ready and waiting.”

“Remember, Pal—I’ve got my eye on you.”

I smiled. I could picture Abe on the other end of the line poking two fingers at his eyes.

I did my usual Saturday morning thing driving down the Parkway to the St. Lawrence Market. When I parked the car, I noticed a beautiful girl admiring my wheels.

“That’s some drive, guy,” she smiled.

She looked familiar, but she was wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses and her red hair was pulled back into a ponytail.

“Don’t I know you?” I asked.

“That line’s so lame,” she smirked.

I colored right up to the roots of my hair—and then, I remembered. “Hey, you’re Cindy.”

“And I thought you didn’t notice,” she smiled. “Where are you going Prof?”

“I’m off to the Market.”

She looped her arm in mine and pulled me toward her, “Well, so am I—you can buy me a coffee.”

I felt really uncomfortable, although I smiled bravely. Ordinarily, I’d be flattered, but this felt like I was cheating on Marilyn—definitely, the furthest thing from my mind—but I didn’t know how to get out of the situation.

“What do you usually buy, Prof?”

“The name’s Scott—and I usually buy fresh produce and cheese—and then end up making something Italian.”

“I love Italian cuisine,” she purred and looked up at me coyly.

There was no way I was going to pick up on that cue.

We entered the foyer and made our way to the food vendors.

“I like the potato latkes from Crepe it Up,” Cindy smiled.

“Since when did coffee turn into breakfast?” I grumbled.

We got our latkes and coffee and sat at a small table watching the passersby.

“Do you ever go out to live theatre, Prof? I hear War Horses at the Princess of Wales Theatre is really good.”

I tried to dodge her suggestion. “I’m not really into live theatre.”

“Maybe you’re just into live drama,” she smiled coyly, “intimate gatherings for two?”

I almost choked on my potato latke. She burst out laughing. “Abe’s right, you are so easy to tease.”

I looked at her dumbly.

“I’m on duty, Prof—watching you.” She poked two fingers at her eyes and laughed until she cried.

“I’m glad you enjoy your work,” I grumped. Then, it occurred to me —“Hey, what about Marilyn?”

“She’s being watched too.”

“Oh, your friend Erin?”

“I knew you had a thing for her,” she pouted.

“Why—because I happened to remember her name?”

She began laughing again.

“Okay, okay,” I raised my hands. “I surrender.”

“You are cute though—I’d go for you, if you weren’t taken.”

“What makes you think I’m taken?”

“I saw that kiss last night outside the book store. You’re definitely taken.”

“Is nothing sacred?” I fumed.

“Not when you’re under surveillance—we do a good job. You never see us.”

I tilted my head to one side as if to say, I’m seeing you now.

She took the cue, smiled, gave me a peck on the cheek, as if she were my girlfriend and whispered, “Thanks for breakfast. Prof.”

Within seconds she merged into the crowd and disappeared from sight.

I got up and made the rounds of the usual vendors keeping an eye out for her. I didn’t see her.

Even on the ride home there was no sign of a car tailing and I forgot about it until I pulled into my parking lot and spotted her leaning up against an unmarked car, smiling.

I shook my head and had to laugh. She was good at her job—very good.

Sort:

Cindy is a stunner with a sense of humour and great deal less tragic than Marilyn. A love triangle in the making, I sense:)

I hope not - Scott's life is already too complicated and now he's unloading his hot car just to please her - I think he's crazy about the girl :)

You get to decide ... you know:):):)

oh Scott, please do not get entangled.

my sentiments too :)

Cindy the undercover, thought Marilyn has a rival who wants the charming Scott. Am not sure Scott can resist a real temptation. Lol
You can't understand each episode until the end...

Good one sir.

yes, all Scott needs is more tension in his life :) Thanks, Tomiwa
