Paul @old-guy-photos has already replied to your post and my best advice is look at his posts and his comments and follow every single person that comments on his posts - all are solid gold great content creators and he has an admirable and loyal following - you can share content using many different tags like the colorchallenges (note American spelling) Paul gave me this little boost when I started out

That's right Paul, I still have it to hand! For you Bob though I know you time is precious so let's take a little of the back end work off you with plug ins. www.steemauto.com will link to your account using the universal Steem Connect, use the Fan base tab (ignore curation for now) and add your favourite content creators (without the @) make sure in settings you change wait time to 30 - I would start out with 100% upvote and then tweak it a you find your upvote drops - the more upvotes you give the more your % drops and it takes some time to recharge.
To aid growth I suggest steemfollower.com - again you log in with Steem Connect and then click services, manual curation and then NEW POSTS. Upvote every day at least 5 but to start out the full 10 is best - the more you upvote the more upvotes you get back which helps your account to grow. Just go down the list upvoting posts - preferably the ones with high value but for the sake of speed you can just do every one down until you hit the daily limit - when you click upvote wait until it says done or you will get stuck with it saying too many upvotes too quickly.
Other then that you get paid out every 7 days, so post something at least every 6 days to ensure continued reward build up - for steemfollower.com you have to log in each day and do you 5, but the upvotes you get from that will continue upto day 6 of a post - after that you will get upvote credit but won't get upvotes until you next post.

Mate, I've been here for a year and STILL don't understand it all. The bots and the upvotes and the SP and the SBD.... I get it... but not really get it. Just do your thing and enjoy the interactions I say :) The more money comes into play the less I find I enjoy it, so I just try to use a few bots n stuff but don't get too bogged down with how many aspects there are to this platform. Time is certainly the hardest part to find enough of to make content, comment on other blogs (and actually read and understand them) plus learning the ins and outs of Steemit. Above all, just enjoy :)
Yes it's all rather understandable, yet, confusing at the same time lol. I plan to try and keep it simple, if I can, and not interfere with the flow too much. Thank you I will do my best to enjoy it :)

Okay I have created a steemfollower account, steemauto wants a payment though I haven't worked that out yet so I need to work to how you pay for services rendered but I shall get there. When it pays out, where does it pay out too? And should I just leave it there for use in upvoting?
Steemauto does not need a payment at the moment - unless they have instigated that for new users. I know the guy that is running it is having bandwidth issues with the Steem blockchain and might need to fund his own node - could you tweet me a screen grab of what is asks for?
Yes it says about using his own node but struggling to get back to that place now as my account is not registered
