Simple Android apps-simple calculator

in #utopian-io5 years ago

It’s nice to be back with another interesting post in the simple Android apps series.
We’ve covered a lot of grounds, which means we are almost finishing the review of applications from this set of developers.
In no particular order, below is a list of the applications I have covered so far.

  • The simple clock application
  • The simple notes application
  • The simple calendar application
  • The simple file manager application
  • The simple draw application
  • The simple music player application
  • The simple contact application
  • The simple camera application
  • The simple gallery application

You can find the link to each of the above application reviews in the link section of this post.

As human beings, calculations are part of our day-to-day activity. We often need to make a few calculations in the office, home, school, church or anywhere that the need arises. At home, mothers consciously or unconsciously engage in different calculations, especially with the cooking and feeding of the family. The father tries to calculate his needs, which enables him to weigh his income and plans on how he can solve his needs. Students are most time given questions that require the use of a calculator.

There are many reasons we all need a calculator in our lives. Whatever the reason is, it is important that we always have it with us. Carrying a normal calculator might appear cumbersome. That is the reason I’m introducing a simple calculator to you all.

What is the simple calculator Android application?

I define the simple calculator as an Android application that enables its users to perform simple calculations like addition, subtraction, division and multiplication.
This application can also work on exponents, percentage, and square roots.

Features of the simple calculator android application

As the name implies, a calculator application’s main work is to solve calculation problems. I expect it to perform the basic calculations in a fast and accurate manner. Below are the features I enjoyed while using this application:

Good user interface

Unlike some other calculating applications, the simple calculator has an easy to navigate and understand user interface.
On launching the application, the homepage gives you a dial pad that enables me to type the numbers and also execute commands. I really liked the way they arranged the buttons.
A user with little tech skill could easily use the application with no extra tutorials.

Excellent performance

This application performed excellently well. The commands execution was swift; There was no form of crashing or lagging on my device. It responded almost immediately whenever I needed its services. This is another plus to the developers.

Colour customization

The developers continued in their colour freedom campaign. They made it possible for me to tweak the application colours the way I wanted. I could change the background colours, the app icon colour, the primary colour and the text colour to suit my taste. Only a few applications have been able to make this possible.

Theme customization

I could switch between themes. As a Manchester United fan, it satisfied me with the dark red theme. For my Chelsea brothers, the developers knew different people will have a different taste, and that made them provide the custom option.
The custom option makes it possible for users to create their own theme. They are free to use any of the colours available.

Other customizations

There are other things that a user can change in the application. This includes:

  • The ability to enable or disable the ‘vibrate on keypress option’. Even though I always keep this feature disabled, some people might prefer to keep this enabled. However you want it, the developers have made it possible for you.

  • The ability to enable or disable the ‘prevent phone from sleeping while the app is in foreground’ feature. This feature saves me the stress of having to go through the process of unlocking my phone each time the phone sleeps in the middle of a calculation. It also helps keep my phone on when a third party needs the calculator. The third party would not have to search for me whenever the screen lock.

Conclusion and suggestion

This application has saved me many times. It has proven to be a useful application in the market, school, and church whenever the need arises.

Despite its usefulness, I think the application would be better if they address the following things in subsequent updates.
• There should be an 'advance' button because the application carries out only basic calculations. The advance button when pressed should take the user to an 'advance' page where users can carry out some advanced calculations.
• I discovered I could copy my answer to the clipboard. I believe they can enhance this feature to enable me to copy both the answer and the problem. For example, if I gave a command to the application to multiply 2 by 1. The application should not only allow me to copy the answer (2) but also allow me to copy the problem (2*1)

Apart from these two suggestions, I believe the application is good enough for anyone in need of its services. The developers are constantly working on it as the last commit was made by Tebbi 17 days ago.

Hi and thank you for the contribution. I appreciate your consistency in promoting every project by Tebbi (Simple app). The post is well-written and informative. However, I think it’d be nice to exclude little/universal apps.

From a reader view, I see no value in promoting a primary calculator application. As you have mentioned, the app cannot perform any advanced calculation. It was made strictly for minor calculation. Thus, your suggestion for advanced computation is trivial. Also, there were grammar and style issues. These issues are not severe, but it is an area to observe and improve. I’d be glad to cite examples in a follow-up comment.
