Simple Android Apps – Simple Calendar

in #utopian-io5 years ago

It’s good to be back with another blog post in this ongoing series.
Before I continue, I want to make a clarification on the main direction of this series. During one of the reviews of my previous post, the moderator advised me to throw more light concerning the direction of the series and also to be more specific. I, therefore, think it will be in the right place for me to address the moderator’s advice without further delay.

This series is aimed at introducing some basic simple Android applications to my readers. All the applications that will be featured in this series are from one team of developers. I am also including tutorials on how to perform some functions that might be helpful to a new user.
At the end of this series, a total of six applications would have been reviewed.

After all, said and done, let’s get to the main business of today.
Life is a free gift of nature but the events that occur in a man’s life are what makes life memorable.
A man’s life event starts immediately he is conceived, the parents consciously or unconsciously counting down to the baby’s expected day of delivery.
A lot of prayers and hope is channelled towards the mother in the labour room, while everyone is anxiously waiting to hear the cry of the new baby.

A lot of circumstances always surrounds this day. To some family, both the baby and mother is lost to the cold hands of death, while just one party might be lost in another family. However, some family record no casualties as the baby and mother make it out alive. Childbirth is mostly referred to as the major event in a Man’s life. This is the reasons why people celebrate birthdays. It is through this date that a man is able to know how long he has lived and how much he has achieved since he arrived this planet.

From the first event of His life, Man then has to deal with dates, task and events all through his lifetime. Sadly, no matter how we live our lives, man will someday still end with an event called death.
Knowing fully well that Man has to deal with dates and events all through His lifetime, there is a need for every man to make plans for important that exist ahead of him.

As you progress in life, these dates and events become so difficult to manage. Let’s take birthdays, for example, the number of birthdays you have to remember increases as your friends and loved increases. This automatically becomes a problem for people who are busy or does not have the ability to totally memorize and store these dates in His/her memory.
Missing an important event can turn out to bring problems and it is therefore not advisable to leave everything to the brain. This problem is the main reason why the Simple Calendar android application was developed.

What is a simple calendar?

The simple calendar may be defined as an application that enables the user to manage dates, events and set reminders. This application also allows you to also create reoccurring events.

Features of a simple calendar

It is rare to find an Android calendar application with numerous features. This is due to the general expectations of an average user when it comes to any android calendar.
Despite the normal straight forward expectation of a normal calendar application, the simple calendar application has been able to add certain functions that make the user enjoy the application usage. I’ll be talking about some of the features that I’ve noticed so far.

Straight forward Interface

Like I said earlier, an Android calendar is expected to be easy for any user to interact with.
The user interface of the simple calendar Android application is straight to the point and also easy to use. Any person can easily interact and should also be able to perform the basic functions of this application.

The colour combination of this application in a way that the user determines the one that best fits Him/her.
As long as the user interface of the application is the concern, the developers of this application have a pass rating from me for a job well done.

Ability to create and Filter events according to categories

A normal calendar application most times just show the dates to the user.
You can’t blame or complain when your native calendar application only performs its basic function of showing dates because that’s the normal function carried out by the normal wall calendar we see at homes.
The simple calendar goes ahead to do more than just showing you the dates available in the normal calendar, the developers were able to integrate a function that enables the user to not just create events, but also filter them according to their priorities.

This function implies that you no longer have to miss any event due to forgetfulness due to the fact that you can comfortably put down all your events safely in the application.
This feature has been useful to me especially in settling my numerous engagements and also planning my days ahead of time.
Using this feature is pretty simple and anybody can comfortably go through the process but for the sake of the few persons that might have issues, I’ll drop the full process below.

Steps involved in setting up Events

  • Install and launch the Simple calendar application.

  • Click on the plus sign.

  • Select when you want the reminder to ring

  • In reoccurring events, select the time frame it will take for the event to repeat itself (select if the event happens daily, weekly, monthly or yearly). But if it’s a single event with no repetition, then leave it at the default ‘No repetition’.

  • Select or add the category of the event to enable you to better categorize your events and also filter them.

  • Click on the ‘tick right’ button at the top corner of the screen to save.

Import /export

This is another feature of the simple calendar application that turns me on. This means anyone can easily import an already saved event into the application or the user can export his event list for safekeeping or any personal reasons.
Users of this application can also import contact birthdays, contact anniversary and even import known National holidays of some selected countries.

In a lay man’s term, this simply means, if the birthday or anniversary of a friend was added to the contact details while saving the contact on the device, then the user can easily import those events into the application.
Concerning the National Holidays, it means you could easily import all the official National Holidays of some selected countries available in the application.

This feature saves the stress of having to manually add your friend’s birthday or anniversary to your reminder.
It also informs the user when a national holiday of a particular country is coming up especially if you are doing business with the said country or if you are new to them.

Colour and theme customization

This application did not disappoint when it comes to the flexibility of colour and theme customization.
The developers gave the users a free role in choosing their desired theme colour, text colour, background colour, primary colour and application icon colour.
With this feature, users can make the application theirs by changing the colours to what the desire.

Alert customization

It’s one thing to have your event written down, it’s another thing to remember it.
This application has a system that allows the user to set the alarm time, the sound to use during the alarm and to select the snooze time.

Other features

I can’t cover all the features extensively but below is a list of some other features that exist in the application.

  • Ability to select your desired time format.
  • Ability to select when the week starts.
  • Ability to customize the weekly and monthly view.
  • Event list customization.
  • Ability to share events with your friends.
  • Ability to select your desired time format.

Conclusion and suggestion

This is another good application from this group of talented developers. They’ve added some cool features that I really enjoy using.
However, I believe the application will do better if they should include cloud storage where these events can be synchronized. This will totally eliminate the fears of losing all saved events in the case of device lost.

I highly recommend this application to anyone in need of a good calendar application.

Hello, @dongentle!

Thank you for this contribution. This is a rather useful project, and I am glad you took the time to create and informative blog post about Simple Calendar. The post is also well-illustrated with relevant graphic content.

On the content side, even though I like all the information provided, I have to admit that I wanted to read a bit more about your personal experience of using the application. Nevertheless, the post is extensive, and contains your personal knowledge, views and suggestions about the development of this project. I also enjoyed all the general information related to the purpose of this tool, so I think that you did a really good job.

That said, the writing of this post was not good enough, I'm afraid. There were issues of style and proofreading. Regardless, I appreciate the effort you put into your work, and look forward to your next contribution.
