Fails of the Urban Explorer: More Bacup

Continuing from the last Fails of the Urban Explorer I have several others I would like to record as possible ones I can revisit later.

Most are in the East Lancashire town of Bacup, a place renown for thugs, beer, violence and a particularly bad council estate.

Bacup Bingo Hall

Arriving in Bacup town centre, a town where you are liable to get your head kicked in if seen skulking around the streets we hit on the old bingo hall.

Someone has been in recently as you can see by the post here and so it was with great optimism that I approached this rather unsightly piece of architecture.

…’Trying the front door and hoping for it to be open is beyond optimism’…

A walk around the back revealed the usual bricked up entrances and solid concrete and then I noticed the gap under the anti-climbing fencing.

It was small but I snuck under it using advanced crawling techniques.

More concrete followed and this door. Perhaps it has been sealed? The last report was several months back.

@bingbabe recorded me crawling under that fence but it’s staying put on her phone!

Well, that was a pile of shit, so on to the next one.

Thorn Wesleyan Methodist Church

While driving through Bacup I noticed some more anti-climbing fencing.

Just so that you know, anti-climbing fencing = keep out = possibly something interesting.

I spotted a church that was surrounded by this fencing but had been floored. This fencing is used everywhere and is hard to climb but easy to kick over. Not that I would do such a sacrilegious act!

Like many abandoned places in rough areas, Thorn Wesleyan Methodist has been recently subjected to fire and likely would be a wreck inside.

Part of it looked like it was being renovated and after waiting for a nosey fat bloke to bugger off, I strode over the collapsed fence and entered.

There was little so see except a sleeping bag at the end, obviously, home for a local homeless person.

The entrance to the main church was securely sealed.

Another pile of pants…, what next?

St Saviors Church

It was turning out to be a very religious day for me though I am not religious at all.

St Saviors is a bit of a celebrity place to visit, being plastered on various UK Urbex sites and so I was thinking, ‘not a problem this one’.

I had seen the pictures of others and was expecting some kind of devil worship shrine inside, but was confronted with newly placed shielding everywhere.

…’some of these old churches are for sale and are very cheap. They can be considered liabilities due to the huge upkeep costs and the fact that people don’t want to make their new lovely home with a graveyard right next to it’…

I'm not heavily built but can't fit through small gaps like this.

The front door had been heavily chained. It reminded me of a dungeon entrance from an S&M scene minus the leather and whips.

Still, I persevered walking around the ridiculously overgrown gardens trying to avoid all the nettles. It wasn't going to happen and I figured that was just bad timing.

Give it a few months, wait until the local hooligans have opened it again and I’ll be back for another visit.

Waterburn Baptist Church

Last on the list was Waterburn Baptist Church. Surely I was going to have some success this day?

The report in the link above was from 7 years ago and so I was not expecting much to be left.

Sure enough, this was another shell and contained the usual blocked windows. Undaunted I walked around the entire building finding a chink in the fencing where I could slip through.

I was within the grounds but that was about it. It seems nobody is interested in smashing down one of these boards for me, and I won't do it. You have to keep to the code of ethics.

…’this one was pushed in a little but not enough for me to scramble through’…

Doubtless, there is little to see inside Waterburn Baptist Church after the years of neglect it has suffered.

I do appear cursed when it comes to churches having failed to get inside any of them besides St Hilda’s some time ago.

So that was it for one day. 7 fails and 1 success which I have still yet to write up as it was not very exciting, beside me injuring my shoulder. That tale is for another day.
