Have you heard of lichee fruit?

in #ulog6 years ago (edited)

Do you know what this is? This summer I am so blessed to eat such precious kind of fruit with such a cheap price! Oh, very delicious! Sweet and juicy!

Yeah, you're right. It is just the famous lichee fruit. No wonder Su Shi--the literary magnet in Song Dynasty wrote down such sentences:

日啖荔枝三百颗,不辞长作岭南人。

If I can eat 300 lichees a day, I would rather stay in Linnan permanently.

(Note: Linnan means the present Guang Dong province and Hai Nan province. )

If you have heard of another poem: 一骑红尘妃子笑,无人知是荔枝来。You'll know how rare lichee is!
In ancient China, it is very difficult for common people living in North China to get lichee without modern means of transportation and cold storage facility, since lichee is very perishable and only grows in South China such as Linnan.

Below is that famous poem about lichee and Lady Yang (also being called Concubine Yang)

《过华清宫(其一)》 杜牧

长安回望绣成堆,山顶千门次第开。
一骑红尘妃子笑,无人知是荔枝来。

Passing Huaqing Palace(1)
Du Mu

Viewed from Chang'an, Mount Li seemed a piece of embroidery;
Countless gates opened one after another on a hill-top.
At a horse raising red dust the imperial concubine smiled;
No one knew it was for the litchi fruit it had brought.

Another English version:

Viewed from afar, the hills paved with brocades in piles,
The palace doors on hilltops opened one by one.
A steed raising red dust won the fair mistress' smiles,
How many steeds bringing her lichee fruit died on the run!

(Note: Chang'an is the capital city of Tang Dynasty, in North China)

Yeah, I know Lychee. I also love this fruit! I'm glad it's season for lychee there in China and you enjoyed it. It's also used to add more flavor to some beverages like iced tea or fruit shake. It's really yummy.
In my country there's also a fruit quite similar to Lychee, commonly known as "Rambutan"

Yeah, you're right. Lichee flavor beverage! I have heard of "Rambutan", but I never see it in reality. I check it online especially now, it is said that "Rambutan" is also called "hair lichee"毛荔枝. They really look similar, both red shell, white and transparent pulp. Always so happy to learn the new thing. Now I have known about "Rambutan", thank you for your "Rambutan" picture. I'll share some photos of Xi'an local food in my next blog.
Xi'an is Chang'an--the capital of Tang Dynasty. Concubine Yang lived in Chang'an city, but lichee growing in South China was her favorite fruit. In order to satisfy her needs, Emperor ordered to carry lichee with post-horses from South China to Chang'an at top speed. A very long distance, so some horses just died on the run.
But Xi'an is really a beautiful place with some beautiful legends and historical sites about Concubine Yang till now. In some way, Concubine Yang is like Daina Princess, both died at the age of 36 years(very young), known for amazing beauty and excellent dance.

Cool, I will be looking to your next post. I'm a foodie so that will be really interesting hehe.

Well, many people believe the princess was killed, she didn't just died in an accident. I don't think prince charles really loved her.

I'm a foodie, too. So I love watching food photos online. Yeah, nobody knows the death truth about Diana Princess. Maybe people can't own beauty, kindness and fame/wealth at the same time. Until now, I would rather believe that my late American husband really died of a sudden heart attack. Sudden death is too heartbroken.

To the question in your title, my Magic 8-Ball says:

Outlook not so good

Haha i just had some today as well. It's the season :)

Oh, maybe. But I am in North China, Lichee grows in South China. I've never seen the lichee tree in reality till now. In ancient China, without modern means of transportation and cold storage facility, it is very difficult to get lichee for people living in North China, since distance is far away and lichee is perishable. So there are a lot of ancient Chinese poems to describle how precious lichee is.
As usual, in my local place, lichee costs about 1.5 dollar per jin(per 500 grams) , but this summer, there's a store around me selling lichee with the price of 0.6 dollar per jin. I don't know why. Only a little expensive more than our local common fruit.
How much does lichee cost in your place? Is it regarded as precious fruit?

Ah i'm not sure how much they cost as i don't normally buy them but they're usually pretty cheap being a tropical fruit and all. Tastes really good though, haha.
