Animals. is an adult animated HBO comedy show that started airing all the way back in 2016, with two seasons already on our screens and a third one coming our way later this year. It was created by Mike Luciano and Phil Matarese, who both write, direct and star in this subtly hilarious and absurd show. The show makes heavy use of retroscripting and improvised dialogue, largely between Mike and Phil, but also including the wide variety of special guests on the show.

The first two episodes were independently produced and presented at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2015, with HBO picking it up and ordering a season to be made, released the following year. Each season has an overarching "human" story, with each episode (or occasionally a double episode special) featuring one of the many animals in New York. The "main" characters are nearly always played by Mike and Phil, often being called Mike and Phil, plus a host of other animal friends. The most common animals, and the ones who started this whole thing off, are Mike and Phil the rats. The very first episode follows Mike and Phil as they try to mate, have babies and wrap their little rat minds around their brief time on Earth, highlighted by the characters rapid growth and maturation through the episode.

We also get to see the lives of cats, squirrels, bees, pigeons, dogs and many many more, plus a special human centered episode for season 2 which goes over the happenings within the human world following a mysterious viral outbreak. If you haven't seen this show already, I strongly recommend you go check it out. Now is as good a time as any, with you having enough time to get caught up before Season 3 hits our screens. The new season looks like it's following the animals lives after the viral outbreak which caused humans to abandon New York, with the many different species forming different factions. You can check out the official trailer for season 3 below this paragraph.
