Tree Tuesday: The BIG Tree
Tourists visiting the north-west of Tasmania may want to take a detour down to Mawbanna to see this huge old Stringybark tree, Eucalyptus obliqua. It is estimated to be over 400 years old. It is currently 62 metres tall (203 feet) but it is believed to have been over 90 meters tall (over 300 feet) before wind knocked the top off. It has a girth of 17 metres. This ancient giant of the forest is simply known as, "The Big Tree". While at the Big Tree you can also see the magnificent Dip Falls. I posted photos and video of this waterfall earlier. You can see that post by clicking here.

Ovee 400 years old.
400 that's old. I see something built around the base of the old tree. Do you know it's purpose?
Sorry for the late reply. Yes they have built a wooden board walk around the base to protect the tree. Othetwise, people walking around the base will compact the soil.
Thanks for the reply , now I can finally get some sleep. Just kidding...
Such a mighty tree. Love the tree ferns too. Can't wait to visit Tasmania. 🦋
Its a great place to explore.
