Some Small but Beautiful Fungi

in #nature7 years ago

Today sun came out for the first time in weeks. I grabbed the opportunity to go for a short perambulation down by the river in search of fungi. Unfortuantely it's been such a wet winter that I have missed the best of the fungi this year. However, there were still some small but interesting specimens to be found.

( All photos, videos, and text on this blog are by @mostly.nature )

First up is Pseudohydnum gelatinosum, the Toothed Jelly Fungus. This specimen was only about 25mm across at most. They can get up to 80mm and often grow in clumps. This, and all of the following fungi, was growing on old tree stumps. Can you see the small orangey red mite crawling around on the surface?

The next one is Clitopilus hobsonii. I don't know if it has a common name. This one was quite small at about 8 - 9 mm across. It is slightly furry on the upper surface. You'll notice the legs of a small spider underneath it.

I tried to get a better shot from underneath but this is the best I could do without resorting to lying down in a muddy puddle. The spider turned out to be two very small spiders, who have chosen avail themselves of this perfect little abode to shelter from the recent rain. It was not until I got home that I noticed there are three other little spiderlings just below the fungus.

And lastly, another small one, under 10mm, for which I have no name.
