It's not a burned piece of wood under some leaves, this is a living tree trunk. As dead and burned as it looks, this Milkplum tree is bouncing back after having all of its branches burned off last winter

I have seen pictures of these trees growing to normal, large-tree proportions in areas that have deep soil and are protected from fires. This particular Milkplum is incredibly stunted from growing in the rocks and it is a very slow-growing tree anyway. From the size of the trunk, it's clear that this tree is extremely old and is really just a natural bonsai, capable of growing despite the harsh sun, high temperatures, very minimal soil and getting burned almost every year.

Here's another nearby tree trunk that is younger but no less gnarly. It looks like the trunks are quite corky. The cell structure of cork makes it fire-retardant and that seems to be what saves the tree - the leaves and smaller stems burn readily and once the trees catch fire, they burn fiercely. It looks like a mass of candles in a ball. The first time I saw one on fire, I thought that was the end of the poor tree that was no bigger than a bush. Next spring, it was growing again.

Super!
Excellent photos, but as soon as I looked at the first photo, I immediately saw the head of a dog or a fox in a burnt tree! I was surprised!
I see it clearly !!!

Amazing trees. Growing up in such difficult conditions. Even have the properties to survive after a fire. Truly, they are adapted to life in hot climates, small amounts of water and good land.

I always thought that fires were terrible catastrophes for grasslands. Now I am learning that most of the plants living there can survive them

How truly amazing! It is a natural bonsai just as you said.

Wow that is really cool. I wouldn't mind a sample to check out those cell structures. Though I wouldn't be able to cut it thin enough to mount it on a slide.

That would be interesting. Can you not order any more pre-prepared slides?

They are really expensive; especially ones of particular special types. Also I purchased some that were cheaper online; and they arrived all broken. They tried to give me a discount instead of a full refund as well.

So to get pre-prepared slides, you have to make sure you get good quality one. And they are not cheap :'(
I wanted some bacteria ones and different types of blood. For a small amount, about 8 slides, was about $100

The texture of the photo is amazing! This tree should be given a gold medal for survival!
