Road less travelled (4): Papua New Guinea (2) - some facts

in #travelfeed6 years ago (edited)

I have been lucky enough to visit a few countries that not a lot of people visit, mainly for my work. I thought it would be a good idea to share these experiences with you guys. After Eritrea, Somalia and North Korea, now a second write-up on Papua New Guinea; some other countries that are on my list to be included in this series are: South Sudan, Iraq, Bhutan and perhaps a few others.

While I'm in Papua New Guinea (PNG) for a short stay - as we speak - I'll write a post on this country once in a while. Below some interesting facts of this little-known country.

National bird
The national bird of PNG is the Raggiana bird of Paradise. The local name of the bird is ‘kumul’, which is also the nickname of the national rugby team.

It is the male bird that possesses this striking plumage:

National flag
The bird is also reflected in the national flag

coffee
They do grown coffee here in PNG, arabica coffee. For a large part, the coffee is marketed as organic coffee.

What language do they speak?
Well, let's say languages - it is estimated that there are over 850 languages in Papua New Guinea, and PNG is therefore the most linguistically diverse place on earth. The country has four official languages: Tok Pisin, English, Hiri Motu, and the Papua New Guinean Sign Language.

I’m sure you didn’t know - but I’ll tell you that you might already now a few words of “Tok Pisin”, the largest ‘lingua franca’ of the country; Tok Pisin is an English-based creole language and an official language. Some examples of Tok Pisin are:

Baggage – kago
Goodbye - gutbai
Thank you very much – Tenkiu tru
What do you want? – yu laikem wanem samting?
Counting: wan – tu – tri - foa – faiv – sikis – seven – et – nain - ten

Are you getting the hang of it?

I just saw a taxi company that was called 'tolait', which could mean "twilight" or "too late"....
